That might be what I would do with her, put her with the black split to paint roo?
(My orange frosting and black/split paint are both cockerels, so I can't breed them together)
Maybe if you put your orange frosting pullet with your paint roo you'd end up with nice Paints without the hackle leakage -- who knows? That's my point, it's all too new yet, we don't know yet!

I’ve just finished reading all 135 pages of this thread yesterday. The Paint color is fascinating and all the “odd” colors it throws are just beautiful. So many lovely and beautiful pictures of Paints too! I’m still pretty new to Silkies, I got my first just a little over two years ago. I was able to attend the Newnan, GA, show this past February. It was my first time ever going to a show and it was great. I was able to meet Bobbi Porto and Joni Johnstone and purchase birds from both. Anyway, my question is this:

One of my black pullets, Bobbin, hatched eight chicks on the 14th-15th of this month. Three are black chicks with minimal gray on their wing tips and their toe fuzz, and the other five are white with black dots. Are these babies paints? From the pictures I’ve seen here, I’m pretty sure they are. They all have dark skin and legs, five toes, and good toe fuzz (from a newbie’s point of view, anyway.) Several of the chicks have vaulted skulls (3 paint and 2 of the blacks, I think).

I was not expecting to get paints from this breeding, or any paints from my birds at all. Here are a couple pictures of Sammy, the cockerel who I suspect to be the dad. (These were taken yesterday and the 17th)



I’m not sure exactly how old he was when I bought him, maybe 5-6 weeks. He was kind of creamy off-white color all over with a darker patch of feathers on his neck. Here is a picture of him a couple days after I brought him home.

Looking back at this picture, I see that it looks like he has a faint black spot on his back, can’t remember noticing that when he was little though. I bought him from Joni Johnstone, as a porcelain, but they also had paints, greys, blacks, and blues for sale. I looked at his feathers closer today, and most of his “red” feathers have just the tips colored red. He also has a few black tipped feathers throughout the red, and black specks in his tail, but you can’t really see them in the photos. It’s hard for me to tell if he really has that “champagne” tinge, or if he’s just dirty. He must have it a little, because I know he’s not pure white, and he did have that dark patch behind his crest when he was little. I think he also has one small black dot on his left foot, but you can’t really see it in the photo. (Please excuse the toe nails..he doesn’t scratch much and is in need of a trim)

The only other cockerel in the pen is what I believe would be called a grey with autosomal red, and he’s very pretty in his own way. I couldn’t get him to sit still for a good side picture though, but I do have a top-view.

So what do you all think? Could Bobbin have just hatched me my first paint chicks? A few months ago I had posted a picture of Sammy on the "Silkies Of A Different Color" thread, I think it was. Someone had said it looked like he might be a red paint, but since I hadn't heard much about those I didn't really think about it again. This is only the second batch of chicks from this coop, the first batch was two whites (which only lived about a week, they were small and I'm not quite sure why they died other than that) and two partridge. Those eggs were from another black hen, a porcelain, and possibly Bobbin. Thanks for any help you can provide, I love reading everything about Silkies. LOVE the photos too!

Those are definitely baby paints. Nice hatch!
The older they get the more pronounced the black spots get. Keep in touch. I would love to see how they come out

The daddy looks to be a red Pyle which is a color that comes out of paint breeding.

Nice paint babies and those blacks should be split to paint and good for breeding to your whites possibly...

Well I have just put my very first lot of paint eggs in the bator to hatch.9 all up..I have two pens

Pen A: paint roo over 2 black hens, 1 paint hen, 1 orange frosting girl (paint)

Pen B: black (split to paint) roo over 2 white hens, 1 paint pen, and 1 paint (light orange frosting) in my avatar

We will see what comes out...I would love some orange frosting chicks...

I hope to set up a paint pen in the spring I have one paint pullet and just hatched a paint chick sex unknown at this point. I was thinking of including my black roo a black hen the paint pullet the chick I also have a white hen and cockerel not sure if I should include the white birds or not.
