So the area my family has chosen to put the chickens has loads of ivy! We will have to kill it before we get the chickens but i was wondering if the chemicals used to kill ivy will harm my chickens because it may stay in the soil for a while. Is it ok to put my chickens in that area after woulds ? we will then have to build the run that will take less than a month cos my dad is slow at jobs so they wont be going in it straight away

I've got ivy growing where my chickens free range and so far they've completely ignored it. It's not like the ground is completely covered in ivy, but there's plenty of it there. But there's also plenty of room without ivy for them to scratch around in. I think I've read elsewhere on the forum that chickens will ignore ivy and other things that aren't good for them as long as they've got other options. Is there any way you could just go around and pull the ivy up? Just rip it out of the ground?

We have been riping the ivy out the ground and its nearly clear except on the walls and hedges , i think its best to try and get rid of the rest so it does not come back!

Georgie17,
I've used Roundup (different brand name, different chemical, stronger concentration) on ivy and bindweed that creeps into my backyard from neighboring yards without problem. I have to spray the ivy twice for it to die back. I do it in the evening so it has a chance to dry before the chickens are out the next day. The bindweed dies within a couple days the ivy takes longer. I then cut it back as far as I can, and clean up the debris well. I usually only have to do it 1x per year in early June. The Glyphosate isn't active in soil.

ETA I'm mostly spraying on fence. It hasn't had a chance to get firmly established in the ground on my side of the fence.
