The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

Wondering what color this is. Dad is an ayam cemani and the mom is one of two alohas, both carrying dun. I've just started reading about dun and wondering if this almost blue color is smokey. I also read that smokey breeds true so assuming that means two copies plus something else to turn khaki to smokey? If so, it can't be smokey?

Just read that smokey is a different allele from dun. And one aloha has grey looking feathers and the other brownish feathers. So maybe ones dun and ones smokey?

I just went and played with dun & smokey in the genetics calculator:
http://kippenjungle.nl/chickencalculator.html

It looks like dun is dominant. So if a chick inherits dun from an Aloha mother, and not from the Ayam Cemani father, that chick would show dun.

It looks like smoky is recessive. So if a chick inherits smoky from an Aloha mother, and not from the Ayam Cemani father, that chick would not show smoky.

For the Aloha hens where one shows grayish and the other brownish feathers, they could have different dilution genes. Or they could both have the same dilution gene, and it looks different because of something else different. I don't know what the "something else" might be, but I know that blue chickens can come in a variety of shades-- maybe dun can too?

You mentioned dun and smoky. Is there any chance that one of your Alohas has blue? Or chocolate? Each of them also dilutes black to a gray or brown shade. I don't know which genes are even a possibility in Alohas, given how new they are.

I am assuming the Ayam Cemani is black not dun, and that he does not carry smoky.

The alohas came from the lady in Phoenix starting the breed. She said these were dun so assuming they are. I know she played with blue in the past though ands tried to weed it back out so maybe? Sure like the color.

In that case, they probably are dun, and the different shades in your hens would be caused by something else. From what I've read, it sounds like she knows her genetics well enough to be correct in what she told you.

Is this frizzle splash? Her mom is either my blue or black black white crested polish x blue satin Silkie. Breed those two girls to my black silkie and was expecting black chicks or is her dad a buff laced polish (possibly if hens retained sperm). She doesn’t have 5 toes, dad could also be a bantam.

She's not splash, her pattern is what is typically known as paint. Her dad is definitely the Polish. I've had several Buff Laced Polish crosses in the past and they've all looked very similar to her.

Please tag me. I have some deep-charcoal hens and pullets and I love them.
Here is a teaser 🤣 from when he was 5 months old, yes he was going through his really ugly stage back then

I have another question... Will breeding him to those splash hens lighten the blue colour in some of the offspring?

Hey, I have a question. Does this chick look silkied? There’s something weird going on with it‘s feathering for sure, but I keep going back and forth with myself. I have another chick it’s age, and the feathering on that one is completely normal, plus I’ve raised chicks from the same pairing and all the others have had normal feather texture at this age. It’s about 2 weeks old, and it’s feathers look “frayed”, especially on the tail.
Neither parent has silkied feathering but there may be a chance they carry it.
