So what causes males to show light and females to show dark if they're both heterozygous?
It's the dermal melanin inhibitor effect of Sex linked Id. The F1s males inherit their Id mutation from their mother(clear shank dame/hens) so they are Id/id+(Id from dame and id+ from sire) and F1 females inherit their id+(dermal melanin deposition promoter, hence dark shanks)So what causes males to show light and females to show dark if they're both heterozygous?
Okay. So my failed sexlink would go best with a silkie to make proper black skinned birds than his half sister, who was a successful sexlink. Just to make sure i understandIt's the dermal melanin inhibitor effect of Sex linked Id. So a Silkie rooster is Fm/Fm, id+/id+ and a clean shank hen is fm+/fm+ and Id/-(one copy only as hens have only one Z sex chromosome, they are ZW and the W is like humans Y, mostly empty and small)
When you cross a Fm/Fm, id+/id+ male with a fm+/fm+, id+/- hen the F1s will be
Males:
Fm/fm+, Id/id+. a single Id is enough to prevent melanin production on the skin(but shanks could still be dark)
Females:
Fm/fm+, id+/- since there is no Id inhibition the females express fully dark skin
This works very well on Silkies. But on Ayam Cemanies this can be problematic since they carry inhibitors that suppress the effect of Id at least partially(just on copy of Id) and some males do show dark skin.
Your failed sex linked was due to his mother being a dark shank hen(id+) that is why it did not work.Okay. So my failed sexlink would go best with a silkie to make proper black skinned birds than his half sister, who was a successful sexlink. Just to make sure i understand
I want to make a fibro naked neck flock too. That's why I'm holding onto him, since he was my only dark skinned naked neck. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to move forwards with that with the birds I have avaliable.Your failed sex linked was due to his mother being a dark shank hen(id+) that is why it did not work.
If you are looking for proper sex links. Just use a Silkie rooster or the sire of that naked neck chick
Big Fatty is still short, & stout. Have the feeling she's gonna remain that way. She's 5 weeks old now.

Also, she's Splash, not light blue.
Could be Recessive White. So I hatched a little guy today (everything is a boy until I know for sure) and was wondering what you think he's expressing? The layering of color has me stumped.
