The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

I lost a hen a few days ago and decided to hatch some of her eggs. I am pretty sure she was a polish leghorn mix. My rooster is a black star. Will the chicks look like her?

Some chicks might look like her, but many will not.
About half the chicks should have the crest, the other half not.
About half the chicks should show blue, the other half not.
About half the chicks should show white barring (from the father), the other half not.

Just considering those traits, about 1/8 of the chicks should be "like her" in having crest, blue, and not-barred. Others will be black, or black with white barring, or blue with white barring, each of those having the option of crest or not.

^ That should cover at least 3/4 of the chicks. There is a chance that a few chicks could show some other color or pattern, depending on which recessive genes are being carried by each parent.

I am also hatching chicks from these gals.

You will probably get lots of black chicks, and lots of black chicks with white barring. Either color can be either gender, so you will not be able to sex them by color.

I see at least one blue hen, so her chicks will probably include some blue ones and some blue ones with white barring (in addition to some plain black ones, and some black with white barring.)

You may also get chicks in various shades of red and gold, and possibly some black-and-white patterns (this depends a bit on what breeds were crossed to make your black star rooster. There are several different ways to cross breeds and end up with males that look like him.) No matter what other colors the chicks have, some of them will have white barring over the top of their other colors.

None of the chicks will be sexlinks, so you will not be able to sex any of them by color.

Edited to add something I forgot: you will probably also get some all-white or mostly-white chicks. The hens with gold feathers and white tails have a gene that turns black into white. So if the rooster sires "black" chicks from those hens, the chicks will actually look white (possibly with a few bits of black leaking through.)
