The Awesome Meyer deal... not much variety.. what did you get?

okay, all my EE's are Welsummers instead... which is cooler, but still doesn't help with the guarantee... NONE of them have green legs, and they have the V on their heads, like the pix (thanks guys!), and eyeliner, which looks neat. I'm much happier, but still was hoping for some polish, or spitzhauben or a rare breed.

they say they cant gurantee any certan breeds but will "try to give you atleast 5" ordering assortments to me means you dont care what you get if you wanted certan breeds should have ordered them ive had nothing but good experiences with meyer i got some silkies 2 of which turned out to be showquality (even though they where all roos)

Oh, Welsummers ARE a "rare" enough breed. Don't feel bad about that! And they lay the most lovely really dark, terra cotta colored eggs!!!! I have one.

Check out this handy, dandy Chicken Breed Chart. It's very useful. You'll notice Welsummer "rarity" quotient is 12%.

they guarantee 5 different breeds, and the lady admitted that they probably just 'ran out at the end', and gave me 3 breeds instead. which stinks. BUT, I'm glad to have welsummers, and yes, If I wanted hair-do chicken specifically, i could have bought them, i was just hoping for a good variety, which they promised, and I paid for. (well, it was still a really good deal...)

The one on the left is a welsummer (i think), the lighter ones are RIRs (i think) and the black one is a Barred Rock (I think)

I called the hatchery, and explained that I would only identify 3 different kinds of chicks, a chipmunky one, the barred rocks, and a reddish one. the lady said the chimpunky ones were EEs, and the reddish ones were RIR.... but the chipmunky ones are apparently welsummers, and I now have no clue about the reddish ones. I'll try to get a GOOD picture of the red ones.

Hello, I just got my rainbow pack of 50 pullets this last Wednesday. They were well mixed, only one died. But let me tell you a funny story. I had seen the video that was posted of the interior of their hatchery and saw they may organize their sorting tables by the types of chicks. I wanted mainstream egg layers as opposed to rare or fancy. The shipping allowed up to 51 chicks in that price bracket. So I added a white plymouth rock male to the order. Now guessing that all the primary egg layers would in one sorting area, the extra specified chick was to get the box filler person over to the 'correct' sorting tables before picking my assortment.

It seemed to work! No funny feathered chicks. Grandfatherjwv

I think you should reserve judgement until you know for sure what you got. I can tell you right now that there are several breeds that the chicks come in a chipmunk pattern. For that matter, there are several that are also light red and also black. You can't hardly beat that price on the special, regardless of breed. I would be thrilled if I got several Welsummers in that deal. Anyway, pictures are pretty much a requirement for any of us to give you a real idea of breed. So many though can look similar, especially to the inexperienced eye and also with hatchery chicks when sometimes things like leg color are incorrect.

Offhand though, these can all look similar...

Black Chicks-
Black Australorp
Black Jersey Giant
Barred Rock
Dominique
Cuckoo Mararns

Light Red Chicks-
Buckeye
New Hampshire Reds
Red Stars

Chipmunk Chicks-
Easter Eggers
Light Brown Leghorn
Speckled Sussex
Welsummer
Barnevelder (except usually darker head, without "v")

What CityChicker said.

I ordered 8 chicks, and the 7 that arrived healthy have turned out to be exactly what they were supposed to be. A Welsummer, a partridge rock, a golden laced wyandotte, and a golden campine. When they arrived, only the welsummer and campine were obvious. For a while I thought maybe the GLW or the PR had died and the other chipmunky chick was an EE, not so.

Wait until they start to feather out. They may surprise you.
