the babies meet the guard dog.....

Yes, Mine was too. He was also terrified of solo lambs and thought that they were being aggressive when they fed off their mums and would growl and then howl at them. However, he has become very accustomed to them all and their behaviour over time and now generally ignores them all!
Good luck, your dog being rather scared of them is better than showing aggression as a starting point,

ya, the pooch lays with the chickens now and has taken possesion of them. They belong to him and he is their great protector, but when we first started out, I used to have to tell him all the time that "its illegal to taste test the chickens before they are cooked."

My lab is very motherly, she just wants to lick them and tuck them to her belly. My sheltie just watches, but I will not let him be alone with the chicks when they free range, but is ok when they are in the tractor. My beagle/doxie mix is on a run line supervised at least 50 feet away at all times. The dogs are all raised the same but each with different personalities and I know my beagle would have breakfast, lunch, dinner and a whole bunch of snacks if she could.
