The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

I just got my bantams on April 1st. I am a new mom. New had chicks before, only small dogs. I'm trying to find pictures of chicks and adults so I can see what they might look like. I have on balck that has a puff of black on the head and a white puffy. The others are a little hard to describe. I'll be sending pictures.

My husband wants to try and keep one of our cockerels, at what age do they start crowing? My chicks are 4 weeks old now.
Depends on the individual roo. My EE started at 8 weeks, but my Lavender Orpington didn't make any attempts until 21 weeks. Even then it was pathetic. I truly thought something was wrong with him.

With his headgear, I KNEW he was a boy by 3 weeks old. Now he can really belt it out. Thankfully, he's quiet most of the time.

16 weeks

20 weeks

Our little bantam chocolate roo didn't start crowing until he was 7 months old! He was a late bloomer.

Just for you: A Cookie Update:

Still sitting on those eggs. If she thinks it's taking a lot time, she right!

Poor thing had started some eggs, but DD needed Cookie for her "Broody Hen Vs. Incubator" experiment. We swapped out Cookie's orig eggs for the experimental ones. (DD insisted on having same egg source & starting at the same time.) The 1st stage of the experiment ends this weekend when the eggs hatch. The 2nd stage will be watching her raise the chicks. For this part, it's DD who will have more work. Cookie only got 7 eggs. Our incubator got 22 eggs & about 18 of them are looking good. DD may soon regret asking for that many. LOL

Here's what just hatched from Cookie's orig eggs.

We have the Orpington thread, the English Orpington thread, the Lavender Orpington thread so I figured I would see what is out there in the way of Bantam Orpingtons.

I hear a few people talk about them but really don't see many pictures or discussions on them. I would love to hear from fellow bantam orp peeps. I really enjoy mine and actually prefer them to LF orps even though I do own both. Here are a couple of pictures of my black and splash. Have the incubator going with some blues and blacks due on the 14th, looking for some nice stock to show next year.

I hope more will join in on this thread!

Can you tell me if my 2 month old Chocolate Bantam is a Roo? I was hoping not but he/she is showing signs so I thought I'd get another opinion.

Thank you for the Cookie update! What a way to start my Thursday morning!

I am confused...when did the precious babies in the pic hatch? Were they in the incubator? What day is Queen Cookie on? Has she become broody ferocious? A bantam orp being ferocious is hard to imagine. LOL!

Please keep us updated on the results of your daughter's project.
