The BANTAM ORPINGTON Thread

OK HenThymes, here are full-body photos of the chicks hatched out of your eggs. Taken today, eggs-actly 12 weeks.

This is "Whatsit,' the one we're now assuming is a rooster. Apart from a couple of weird noices, he is being quiet

- which he'll have to since I don't have any prospects for re-homing him right now. The third chick went to a breeder's home a few weeks ago. He didn't crow. but was very much a roo, and mounted my Brahma hen all the time. He had to go!

He's in with my Cochin pullet for now. and completely subservient to her. She doesn't peck or bully him but he sure know's who's boss in that coop!

This is 'Grace,' aka Gracie or Gracie-Lou. She is shy and very devoted to her foster mom, who she rooms with. I'm trying to handle both of them as much as I can, but they are taking longer to win over than my other chickens.

I think they're good looking birds, but what do I know.

In a way it's nice to have a 'pair' in case I ever want to breed more, but if I do that, I'll have to win over the locals. Even our urban farmers keep large fowl in their backyard flocks. I'm not sure why they're reluctant to try bantams. The eggs of my two that are laying are very nice-sized (esp the Brahma) and they are so sweet, compared to some of the breeds others in my area are trying to raise. I think Bantams are the BEST!!!!

They are looking really good, very well put together and great color.

He has the start of a very nice comb. Their feathering will come together as they get older, their older sister looked just like that till about 6 months old and she is gorgeous and will start showing next month. It is very handy to actually have a pair.

I will have to get some updated pictures of the parents and siblings, dad is looking really good and moms have just come thru molt and looking wonderful. Plan to show dad and one of the hens later this fall as well.

Thank you for sharing!

Can someone give me an idea on sizes possible without being some kind of throwback to LF Orp? I have a couple of 'little' blue hens here that are just GORGEOUS but...they're really quite large! No possibility of crossbreeding far as I know; momma was a splash BantyOrp and daddy was a black BantyOrp, and they were hatched by a d'Anvers, so they didn't get this size idea from HER!
