The Best Aviary Top?

Thanks hopefully there is a difference.

The chicken wire I have that has rusted is on the sides of my peachick pen. It was new when we put it on there but after maybe 2 years it has started getting all rusted.

I asked the same stuff on the GBWF forum and one person replied saying that even with a metal top the wind action on a plant will make it destroy a metal top. I don't get severe wind here although if another hurricane comes there might be some serious wind.

They also told me if possible instead of placing posts directly into the ground I need to first put in concrete that the posts will go onto or into so that they will last much longer.

Maybe if I go to the Jacksonville Zoo again any time soon I could ask about who made their aviaries. Maybe I can find out on zoochat...

EDIT: Wow...I actually found the builders or mesh creators for several of the Jackonville Zoo's exhibits such as the aviaries...Here the are:http://www.athruzcages.com/portfolio.php It says it is a vanishing coil mesh. Interesting sounds expensive!

This confuses me, it looks like cables going to the center but then their is no support pole in the middle, how is this done?

I guess they have a lot of tension with some corner posts? I was thinking the same thing when I went to upload that photo. It would be cool to watch a big fancy zoo aviary being made.

My experience. Welded wire on top of ten foot tall pen = one dead four figure peach pied male within 6 months. Netting on 15 pens for 4 years = ZERO dead birds from broken necks. I will admit however that the NPIP inspector and I caused a spalding opal black shoulder to fly up and knock himself out on a cross beam during last years inspection. He could not walk for a couple of days but eventually recovered.

When my peas spook it is like a bomb went off made of peas, they go everywhere land on the buildings and in the trees, like today for example,

I am working in front of the barn tearing down old fence and clearing for a new one , peas are layed out in the new turned dirt and being their nosey self... keeping an eye out on mom then BOOM every pea in the air took flight squaking their heads off, now this got me scratching my head cause i see nothing and they ain't looking around like they do either, i got everyone settled down and things were back to normal, i got back to work again , peas in tow and BOOM they do it again, now i am spooked, mabe thier is some kind of danger i am not seeing, call the dogs and we go threw everything and they alert to nothing, got everyone settled oce again got back to work then BOOM they did it again, then it hit me, i took the gates down from in front of the ally way of my barn and now the dogs could just trot threw without stopping, the peas were not use to that and so it spooked them and they blew up like a bomb.

I can see how they could get hurt in a pen and the more you have in the pen the worse it could be cause they could get hurt bumping and banging into things trying to get away from the booger that is after them.
