Leghorns set the record for most eggs laid Ina year and they lay large -extra large eggs. The downside to leghorns is that they are flighty. They are also not very cold hardy because they were developed in Italy. I would say a friendly cold hardy layer would be a wyondotte.

Yes, the record was set by a White Leghorn in 1979 (371 eggs in 365 days). Until that time the record was held by a Black Australorp (364 eggs in 365 days in 1924), although among brown egg layers, Black and Red Sex Links are the hens that most consistently exceed 300 eggs per hen per year.

Rhode Island Reds, the Golden Comet, and Plymouth Rock chickens are breeds that are winter hardy,excellent layers, and have good temperments. I would like to find a medium size good layer that lays deep blue or green eggs. The easteregger? But these three have good reputations as very reliable and productive layers.

Golden Comet is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links, which are produced by crossing a red gene rooster with a silver gene hen. Other labels under which Red Sex Links are sold include Red Star, Gold Star, Golden Buff, Cinnamon Queen, Gold Sex Link, Brown Sex Link, Bovans Brown, Hubbard Golden Comet, Isa Brown, Shaver Brown, Babcock Brown, Warrens, HyLine Brown, Gold Line, Lohmans, Lohmans Brown, Red Shaver, Brown Shaver, Bovans Goldline, etc., but no matter which label they are marketed under, Red Sex Links are egg laying machines, Black Sex Links are produced by crossing a red gene rooster with a barred hen and are sometimes sold by hatcheries under the labels, Black Star, Bovans Nera, and Rock Red. Like Red Sex Links, they are egg laying machines, outlaying either parent breed. It's one of the interesting quirks of hybridization.

My choice for best pure breed layers would be Plymouth Rock, Australorp, Rhode island red, wyandotte, barred rock and like sussex. Possibly orp aswell. If you get one at POL try and pick the least poofy one. They often lay better. I would't choose barnevelder if high egg production is in mind. Red sex links are a good hybrid, laying loads of eggs in it first year, but after that egg production drops. I woukd advise you to get a Black Rhock/Rocky Rhode/Rhode Rock, a Plymouth Rock RIR mix, tfey lay lots of eggs, are extremely cold hardy and often live fc
for 10 years, laying until their dying day. :yiipchick
