The best part of having chickens

Ok time for me to stop lurking. I've been lurking all around this great site since late November when I started my first flock. I am having a ball with my chickens and the biggest thing they have changed for me is now I get up at the crack of dawn to open the cook so my girls can get out in the run and to give them fresh water. I keep their hanging feeder and also a PVC feeder stocked at all times. I used to lay in bed till my dog woke me up which was shortly after daylight. Now I have to get up and take her out before its good and light so I can get to the coop and check on the girls. Now one of my biggest problems is trying to find a way to drag myself away from this site.

Welcome Steve. Tell us about your flock.
Thanks for the warm welcome here. Lazy gardener thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about my girls. I have two barred rocks (Michelle and Dinah), a cuckoo maran (Rose), a big ol girl that I don't know her breed (Lilly) and 4 pullets that was hatched on Sept. 24th. Two of them are golden comets (Betsy and Sara) and the other two are Rhode Island Reds (Gertrude and Betty Lou). They are in a coop built by a neighbor and myself thats around 7x7 and a little over 6 feet high with an attached run thats around 7x20. The run is covered with chicken wire due to lots of hawks around here. In fact theres a big popular tree near the run thats a favorite place for hawks to sit in. I do have a couple of questions but I gotta figure out the right forum to post them.

Our beautiful weather was yesterday, but it was nice enough today, just colder. Got home from the hospital and spent almost an hour just standing outside the run, watching the birds! Pulled grass and tossed it to them, enjoyed watching how my young rooster has matured and is calling the ladies for treats. When he finally took some for himself, the hens literally pullet the grass from his beak, and he let them....what a good boy!

What LG said. Take care of yourself!
Rachel, so glad you got home. You take care of yourself, girl.... and listen to what your body is telling you! Hugs, and prayers!
x2!

My friends all look at me funny... But I just love my chickens. They hear me open the door and all come running. It's a nice feeling, even if I know they're just there for treats :)

Plus a chicken coop is an endless source of tinkering-entertainment :)
