CHAPTER 31 SUNSHINE AND FREE TIME
The next day, the biggest little rooster could hardly believe his eyes. It was the SUN! He ran out of the coop and did a happy dance! It was still wet and a little muddy outside, but the sun was shining!
The humanlady came out and started raking some of the leaves. She was exposing some pretty bright new green grass. Every so often shed find a fat slimy bug and throw it into the run, where one of the Ladies would grab it, and slurp it down
The Ladies and the biggest little rooster ran back and forth along the fence watching. They tried to look pathetic and cute and starving. She kept looking at them and laughing. She knew they all wanted out, and was going to let them, but had to complete some raking first. She was talking to them, raking, and exposing very sweet-looking new grass. The poor chickens were just about drooling.
Finally, she opened the gate. They all rushed out, bumping and pushing each other, and nearly stepping on each other. The biggest little rooster figured the Ladies could find their own sweet grass. He didnt need to call them to it. They all ran and had a feast!
The humanlady had noticed that the old pieces of lumber seemed to attract slugs. So she purposely spread the lumber out, and in the new sunshine, turned over the boards. The biggest little rooster figured the humanlady must love them, because she actually grabbed the slimy little things and threw them toward the chickens.
The four days of rain and misery was almost worth it to have this wonderful feast afterwards. Well, maybe not FOUR days, but he hated the rain and loved this treat.
They didnt even go on adventures. The biggest little rooster and his Ladies just scratched and ate, and scratched and ate.
After getting fairly full, they all ran over to the older neighbors for a visit. The biggest little rooster did not see the neighbor, so he talked the Ladies into going up on the deck and pecking on the neighbors door. No one was home. The biggest little rooster didnt mind. They werent looking for treats, they just wanted to say hello.
Then they ran back to see what the humanlady was doing. The biggest little rooster did not get too close. He wasnt sure if the humanlady was still upset with him.
They had broke the outdoor roost, and the humanlady was rebuilding it a little stronger. She had the noisy tools again. The Ladies did not like the noisy tools, so the biggest little rooster took them over to the opposite side of the yard. There was a pile of leaves the humanlady didnt pick up, so the biggest little rooster threw himself into the center of the pile, and covered himself with leaves. He called to the Ladies, making the there is something totally yummy right here sound.
The Ladies giggled. They jumped into the pile, scratching leaves all over looking for the biggest little rooster. He popped his head up and scared them. They were halfway across the yard before they realized it was him.
They went back to the leaf pile and scratched and rolled and played until it was no longer a pile. The biggest little rooster liked how the multicolored leaves were lying against the green grass. He thought the whole lawn would look good that way. He talked the Ladies into helping him scatter the leaves, to make the yard prettier for the humanlady.
When they had scratched and tossed the leaves as far as they could, the biggest little rooster stood back and looked. Yes, it was a mighty colorful yard. He noticed a tree in the older neighbors yard, so next they ran over there to spread out her leaves. Those leaves were not in a pile, which made spreading them seem more like a chore than fun.
The biggest little rooster was getting hungry again, so he stopped the leaf spreading, and went back to the green grass. The biggest little rooster had noticed that the Ladies didnt always stay right by him when they were out. Like now, they were still exploring the neighbors leaves. He wondered if he upset them somehow. He couldnt remember doing anything that might upset them, but sometimes they get mad at what he DOESNT do, instead of what he does do. They were so hard to figure out.
