CHAPTER 8- Survival Farmette continued
It was 15 minutes before dark, and the little chickens all walked to the coop for the tribal council. They didn't know what a tribal council was, so they were sure whether to be excited or scared. The coop was just barely lit with the very dim solar light that was fading fast.
The Ladies asked for complete silence, and then the golden one said, " The humans who play Survivor send someone home each night. But we can't do that. So what will happen is the winners (The Grade A's) will get to go to the shed first and choose where they want to sleep. Next the Clucker Pluckers will go in, and then the Pot Pies. In the morning, the Grade A's will get to sleep in while the others fetch breakfast for them. After breakfast, you all will meet back at the coop for the next challenge."
There was alot of squirming in the shed that night. The Grade A's had the best roosting spots, and everyone felt out of place. But the biggest little rooster saw new friendships had been made, and he was pleased. And no one even mentioned the big brown monster. They were all chattering about how tough it was to get the worms through the chicken wire.
After breakfast, they all went to the coop. It was still raining a little bit, but it almost looked like the sun might come out.
The ladies announced the morning challenge. It was going to be an obstacle course relay.
The starter chicken would run under the string that the humanlady had across part of the yard to mark the new run fence.( Humanlady is VERY surprised that no chicken has been clotheslined on that in the past week). Then the chicken would run, and jump over the first fence post, into the older neighbors yard and onto her porch.
The next chicken would be on the porch. When tagged, they will walk down the deck railing, then around the dog pen into the 2nd left-hand neighbors yard. They'd run under the motor home and around the pool, where the 3rd chicken will be waiting.
The last chicken would have to run under the deck, crossing on the balance beam underneath. From there, it will hop on the bucket, and then onto the garbage can, and the other bucket, then onto their little run. Then it was a race back to the coop.
So everyone got ready. The biggest little rooster is the fastest runner, but big and clumsy. So he decided to do the first part of the race.
The countdown began "Bwak, bwak, bwak..BWAK"
And they were off running. The three starters managed to duck under the rope and ran for the fence. The biggest little roster had to slow for just a second to jump the fence. The runner for the Grade A's got herself a little discombobulated, and ended up too far to the right. She tried to jump thru the fence... and smacked into chicken wire. Darn it!! She forgot that half the fence was going to be part of the new run. She got up and shook herself off and continued on.
Meanwhile, the biggest little rooster was already on the neighbors deck, and his Clucker Plucker teammate was gracefully sliding down the railing as the Pot Pie runner was coming up the stairs.
The neighbors dog was barking. The chickens thought she was encouraging them on. The barking brought the neighbor out, and what did she see?
One rooster was on her porch crowing. One chicken was sliding down her railing. One chicken was running around her dog pen and disappearing under the neighbors motor home. One chicken was running across its yard, and one jumping from the garbage can to the little chicken run. And 4 other chickens all running around after the others squawking loudly. And the 4 Ladies were jumping up and down in their run. And everyone but the Ladies was wearing colored bandanas. She thought something must have scared the chickens, so she went inside to get a treat for them all.
The first team back to the coop was the biggest little roosters Clucker Pluckers. Next was the Pot Pies, and last but not least, the Grade A's.
Just at that point, the neighbor came out with treats, so the Ladies decided the winners would get to go fill themselves first. The Clucker Pluckers ran over. The biggest little rooster decided that even though they won, everyone deserved treats, so he called the other teams over to share.
The Ladies tried to object, but were impressed with the biggest little rooster's kindness. They were even more impressed when he managed to bring them some of the treats, even though he had to spit the treats through the chicken wire.
The Ladies told everyone to nap. Because the final challenge would be held after naptime.
