CHAPTER 19- WEEKEND ADVENTURE
The next morning, the biggest little rooster woke, and wasnt in the mood to crow. Their new coop did not have a window yet, so it was still dark in there, even though the biggest little rooster knew the sun was up.
The humanlady did not let them out of the coop. She told the biggest little rooster that she read on some online forum that you should keep chickens locked up in a new coop for a few days. He wasnt sure what that meant, but it didnt sound good. The biggest little rooster thought he better come up with a plan to keep them all from going stir crazy.
They started off by playing Truth or Dare. He picked Truth every time he was chosen. He didnt want to be dared. The little golden girl was dared to run around in a circle 5 times and then hop up on the roost. She couldnt even see the roost after spinning. She ran into the wall several times. They had a hard time thinking of dares, so they ended the game.
Next, they played twenty questions. That was quite fun, but they were all getting a bit antsy from just sitting around. The biggest little rooster decided to do some exercise. They did wing stretches, and leg lifts. They had a contest to see who could jump highest. The little white hen won that one, unfortunately hitting her head on the top of the coop. It almost served her right, though, because she cheated. They were supposed to jump from a standing position. She squatted before her jump.
They heard the humanlady come to the pop door. They all ran into the vestibule (Yes, their new coop actually has a vestibule). They waited and waited
and waited
and waited. Then finally, the little pop door was opened and they all tried to run out at once.
HE WAS FREE!! Ahhh, the fresh air, the blue sky, the smell of autumn. Leaves were starting to turn colors and fall off the trees. The air was crisp and felt fresh and invigorating. It felt so good to be outside. He stood up tall and stretched out his wings. It was a beautiful day!
The humanlady had done her best to try to cover the fence so they couldnt escape. She had a chicken wire roof coming off the coop. The biggest little rooster knew he could find a way out, but for now, he was quite content just hanging out with his little flock.
There was still a bunch of lumber in a pile in the run. The chickens all liked to climb on it. The humanlady turned over a few pieces of lumber to expose the bugs underneath. The biggest little rooster did his job. He discovered the bugs and called the little flock over. He did not partake in the bug fest, because he was the flock leader. One of the little golden girls was quicker and more alert than the others. She managed to get most of the crickets.
The humanlady was sitting and watching them. She told the biggest little rooster that he was such a good man. He fluffed up all proud of himself. Then, something caught her eye. There in the bushes was a little nest with three eggs. It was very well hidden. If the humanlady wasnt kind enough to turn over the boards for bugs, shed never have noticed the eggs.
A short while later, the little white hen was digging in the circle around the tree, and uncovered yet another egg. It looked like it had been under the dirt for quite some time. She threw that egg away, but went inside and scrambled up the other 3 and came back with an egg and waffle treat!
When the humanlady finally went inside, the biggest little rooster hopped the fence and took a run around the yards. He snuck off to find some bugs of his very own.
The days are getting shorter, so before he knew it, the biggest little rooster had to head home. The girls who followed him out of the run were still following him, so he had to get them home. He didnt want to go into the run. So he played a short game of Catch Me If You Can with the humanlady. He won. Game ended, so he voluntarily went into the pen. Although humanlady didnt know the game was over. She was still running after him.
He did a little headcount, walked around the coop seventeen times, pecking at the roost as he passed under it, then finally got the nerve to jump up on the roost. Lights out! Good Night !!
