Moved out of the city recently, thank goodness. Not a city girl. I have never had chickens before, although almost everyone else in my family has had them at some point. I also have a fear of birds(except birds of prey, makes no sense) thanks, Dad, for letting me watch The Birds at six years old, and thanks to my sister's huge, giant, did I say ,huge and mean Leghorn rooster, Pete. But, for some reason, I have recently developed a strong urge to have chickens. So now I have eight adorable little Barred Rocks residing in my dining room and a coop under construction.

Lastly but by no means least, the members here are amazing - very friendly and helpful, so if you need an answer to a question or simply want some reassurance that what you are doing is ok, then post away - we all help each other out here at BYC.

Just a friendly FYI your dining room will get filled up w/ dust in a couple of week time. I got 15 chicks in my garage waiting to go to my henhouse right now. My first batch of chicks had left 1/8 " of dust on everything since I kept them there for almost 12 wks while I design & build my coop. They grow so fast never knew it since I came from a big city.

:welcome

If you have any questions about your coop build, this is the place to get answers:

You might want to build it bigger than for 8 birds...chicken math has a way of catching up with folks. And the ones you have now will appreciate the extra space.

Have fun with your chicks!

"He who builds" :) works commercial construction, and is very often given construction materials, that is why we are doing 10x10 blocks, that way we can add extra run or coop, and change configuration by bolting them together. Also not sure yet how may will be hens and roos yet, but will definitely keep space in mind. Also planning to allow some free-range time. Thanks for the input, I am use all I can get. :)
