The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

A few weeks ago I found a muscovy nest when I did the annual "purging of the extra empty feedbags." Mama didn't return to that nest, but started another one in the hay area. Yesterday morning I counted 8 eggs in the nest. Last night, I couldn't count any eggs because there was a duck hen sitting on it. So she may have started sitting for the duration. It's her first time.

I already had my first natural babies of the year about a week ago. First time muscovy mom hatched out 10.

Headed out to check the barn now...

So when I checked yesterday morning, she was off the nest, and off the nest all day. At night chores, she was back on the nest. Not sure what she's thinking now.

I checked this morning, no duck on the nest, but she had moved one egg off to the side. I put it back in, but does that mean it's no good?

Nothing unusual there. A lot of times they take a day or two to warm up. She´ll start sitting seriously soon, but you´ll probably find she´s added another egg or two....

Yes, I think she´s my prettiest one. I found her in a cage in a shop, she hardly had any feathers on her! I bought her out of pity, but she´s lovely, she´s the one that hatched out my goslings. So I´ve let her brood her own egg for a reward!

I think she has started to get serious about sitting now. When she came off the nest for breakfast and a quick drink, I was able to count 18 eggs in the nest, all arranged in a flat circle. Looks like she's got a plan and sticking to it. Only about 35 days to go!
