The Broody Duck Thread for 2014

Hello again, Miss Lydia I am sending a couple of pics for you, they are of Boomer. In one pic he/she is laying next to the drake on the other side of the panel. He/She is quite the politician haha he/she has slept next to him for the last couple of nights while the two mom ducks sleep on the nest with the little ones. I am hopeful eventually he will accept Boomer into the flock. Remember I told you Boomer sits by the window watching his mother swim? Well, I was worried about the new babies when the ducks went out to swim and low and behold I worried for nothing because Boomer led them all to the window and they all sat there and watched the moms swim. It was the most amazing thing I think I've ever seen. The babies follow little Boomer around as if he/she is the mom and Boomer is so good to them. I think Boomer is a duck because of how natural he/she is with the babies. We just love Boomer and couldn't have asked for a better first duckling. I think the moms are happy too because Boomer is a really good babysitter LOL.

That is just the sweetest story. and those pics are so precious. Looks like Boomer is winning the drake over lets hope so She is one smart cookie.. and look at those babies my gosh you have to be in love. These are the things we love to hear. Thanks so much for sharing them with us.

I had one of my girls do the same thing and came home with seven babies, as long as she is hidden really good i think she'll be OK, they usually bury there eggs and run for cover if theres any danger.
She's hidden pretty good. And here is a updated photo of olaf and his mama they move so much it's hard to get a good pic

So to stop the fighting, I kicked the khaki's off the nests and out and my muscovy is sitting on the mixed nest now. Not to sure what will happen since the eggs are mixed. If any hatch at 28 days, i will know they are khaki's and any that are left will be muscovy's. Will she be able to continue to sit on the nest if their not hatched yet and teach the new ones what to do? Maybe i should give the baby khaki's to the khaki's when their born and the muscovy will stay sitting on the eggs till day 35 has been reached and then raise her own. Has anyone gone through this? I'm figuring Khaki's on the 6th and muscovies on the 13th.

Mixed hatches, or staggered, that is tough. I always have just let them go naturally, then disposed any non hatchers on Day35. But I have no Scovy experience.

I had the hardest experience last night. i was examining the broodies eggs for any signs of hatching. In the back of the nest there was an egg with no shell and just membrane. I thought it was dead and picked it up and some yolk leaked out of a huge tear. I was about to rid of it and then... it kicked. i had no idea how old the duckling was and i knew there was no chance it would survive. I held the kicking membrane in the egg and let it die in my hands. When i did an eggtopsy(not really because i knew how it died) i found a beautiful cayuga duckling about three days until hatch.... egg tooth and all. it looked so peaceful and we buried it outside the run. It was hard to watch it die in my hands but there was no way in the world it would have made it.
