The Buckeye Thread

How is your buckeye breeding going? I am in Michigan and ordering some from Hoovers. Hope they are good!
It's not. I never got to breed them because my rooster had a hip problem that kept him from being able to mate properly. Life got in the way, my hens petered out in their 2nd year, so I took it as a sign and moved on. Now I'm breeding "eggers", colored egg layers, just for fun and for selling eggs. It's all good.

There's a great breeder in Indiana, can't remember their name. I wouldn't buy from a large hatchery and expect the birds to be quality. Look for someone who's really serious about Buckeyes to get the best quality. Hope yours turn out good for you!

Oh man, that stinks! I'm back and forth on them....not sure enough people are looking to sell chicks.....colored eggers are probably a better idea...lol

My first Buckeyes were a great group, mellow yet active personalities. Very smart birds too. These are reasons to stay with them. I’m getting a few female hatchery chicks later this year. I’d love to get them from a breeder, especially a local one, but I don’t think you can get sexed day-olds (agreement with DH is no rooster), and many breeders do not vaccinate for Mareks.

Yeah, I really love their temperaments, very laid back yet good foragers. Ours followed us around, never were mean to the other breeds. Best rooster we ever had too...we still have him and he's going on 5. I learned to sex day old chicks. The females are a bit darker and their stripes down their backs have a much cleaner edge than the males whose stripes are a bit less defined. Their pea combs are impervious to frostbite which is great where we live.
