The Buckeye Thread

It could easily be a regional illness. I have heard of things like Marek's effecting birds differently based on the region. Where are you located? and where did the Buckeyes come from? Where were your other birds from?
I am in Southern IL, Buckeyes came from MO, Australorps came from Central IL, all the other chicks I hatched. Some eggs were from FL. The most were from TN.

I'm hoping to get some advice on a lone Buckeye cockerel (Urch stock) that I hatched in May. He was the only chick to hatch from 12+ eggs, and I don't have any other Buckeyes. Simply because I don't have a mate for him and don't want to keep superfluous roosters thru winter, he was on the short list to go when I thin out the flock next month. But since I really want to start working with this breed, I thought I'd get a second opinion. If he shows any promise at all, I may hang onto him a bit longer and start looking for some hens. If not, I'll cull him and start over with a batch of chicks next Spring. He's about 17 weeks old now, and feathers are still coming in. Any thoughts? Thanks!
From what I can see (and he is young yet as Laura says), he has a nice comb & good head, body looks broad and full, good spacing between his legs, front looks good for age & for the color folks, no black in his breast feathers -- Have you weighed him? What is his weight at this age? P.S. Your cockerel holds his wings correctly too per SOP with wing fronts covered by breast feathers and wing points by saddle feathers.
Thx! He is btw 5.5-6lbs right now. He seems to be on target, judging by earlier posts. That one wing looks good, but the other is a bit wonky. (As you may be able to see in some pics.) I'm hoping he's just going thru an awkward feathering stage, so I'm gonna give him a few more months to see what develops wing & tail-wise.

I was sad that the APA Canadian Nationals only had my Buckeyes in there for the breed. My male beat out my female. I expected as much, he is a looker.

She has started to lay, I didn't even realize it until showing them, as she had an egg in her cage.

23 weeks old.

She's about 19 weeks in this picture.

Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am reading back and gaining a lot of valuable information. I want to start showing Buckeyes. I'm unable to find anyone down here in Alabama with Buckeyes and I missed the chick season so I will just work on learning what I can till then.
