The Buckeye Thread

Thank you, now back to chickens...

My teen didn't understand when I said the chickens are to be seperated for 4 weeks. She thought it was just when they are to be cooped. So much for that and she let them out for grazing time.

Now what?!?

My other question is has anyone done a Buckeye Australorp X for meat/eggs. I had a straight run of 8 Australorps and only 2 were pullets. I was going to buy some Cornish Rocks but rather just have my own birds. Opinions?

. Buckeyes are a dual purpose so good for meat. If you can get a Cornish to cross to make your own meat birds that's what I'd use on the bucks. I'm planning on that for next spring. Buck roo to Cornish hen.

Right and size wise they would be nice, what would you say the growth rate to processing would be? I'm asking about the Australorps just because I already have them and I just have the Buckeye cockerels. The two Australorp boys I have are in the pen to be processed tonight.

I have to agree about the discord between two groups and new people like myself who just want to learn and do good for the breed. I don't have thin skin, and me being in Alabama has nothing to do with it. I'm a Northern California girl grew up in the foothills showing sheep for 4H and a youth FFA kid. I won't hesitate to discontinue dealings with negative or sarcastic people. As retired Army family I can tell you I have deltg with enough sarcasm for a couple lifetimes. I face enough in my day to day that's why I got my Buckeyes. They are my hobby and something that brings me great joy. As for ribbons and awards, I don't care I just want to help with conservation with my little backyard flock. The shows... that's so someone like me who never seen a Buckeye close and personal can have the opportunity to meet these magnificent birds. They might take interest and contribute as well. I may screw up how I say something and my questions may be really basic. Those who post with advise and opinions let me take what you say and choose for myself. I don't need to be told why this person is wrong. So this meaage is to y'all. Help the new people like me please, it's about the Buckeye not you.
Couldn't agree more! I am just a Newbie in Chickens, but have been in involved with animals, even Chickens all my life. I have competed in Field Trials, UBGF Conformation shows, and AKC Conformation shows, and I have had good success for someone who was always small time. I too can see sacrcastic negative people a few miles away. I have No respect for those type of people. Period!!

I come on here looking for advice, and help at times. Other times I just enjoy reading and learning until the discord begins! There are those that are always on here that are Helpful, Knowledgeable, Professional, and Always Polite regardless of your experience or lack thereof.

Then from time to time the sarcastic, negative faction shows up, gets the thread shut down or worse deleted. After thatl who loses? We who are trying to learn that's Who! I am just glad I had the opportunity to read completely through the original Buckeye thread before it was deleted.

There was a lot of info in it and it also gave me a chance to see who the helpful people are.

If you're here to discuss breeding strategies, progress, share information about showing, etc., please stay & set a spell...if, however, you're here to potstir, spew negativity, or otherwise cause contention, please move on.

DO NOT QUOTE posts which break rules - report them. Quoting/replying to posts that break rules is considered trolling, which could result in an infraction.

It's okay to disagree - but doing so in a nasty & arrogant manner will gain you nothing. Those of you with children who are looking up to you in your poultry endeavors, please always remember that you are a role model. Allowing them to see that you are bickering, name calling, and arrogant is certainly not something you want to pass along.

Ideally, you keep new birds quarantined from your existing flock. That's the ideal. In real life, stuff happens. Although I always tell folks who get birds from me that no matter who they get them from, they should quarantine the new ones, sometimes you just can't, as has happened to you.

So you have several choices: separate them again and proceed as if they didn't mix, or let them stay mixed, and be extremely vigilant. If you see signs of illness, even the slightest, separate those that are showing them and treat accordingly.

Did you see any squabbling among the group once they were out together? Usually I find it easier to integrate new birds at night, but if they're getting along ok today, you may be all right.

Luckluckluck!

I don't know if anyone has done Buckeye x Australorp crosses, but no doubt someone has. If your focus is meat, I don't know that they'd be ideal, since the Australorps are more of an egg laying bird. But it would be interesting to try, and since you have them already, might as well use them, eh?

Come back and tell us how it works!

As Pathfinder pointed out austrolorps are egg layers not meat birds. Cornish, straight bucks or a cross to any other dual purpose would work. Keep in mind the bucks are slow to maturation. By crossing the Cornish in you speed that up. If you want meat quickly then order straight Cornish. Go do one of the hatchery websites and read through the dual purpose and meat birds sections to learn what would be the best for your purpose.

LOL. I have to say Sarah, every time you say "Bucks" I see deer in my head. *snort* Comes from being so far out in the country I guess, and all the deer hunters around me. Silly me.
