It depends on the state fair. The Indiana open state fair show normally runs close to 1000 birds and it's the same players as come to normal shows. So though the trophy says "fair" doesn't mean it's a bad show. I believe they earn apa points as well. Walt can correct me on that one as it's been several years since we went.

The reason we didn't go the last two years was heat related not molt. Most birds around here aren't molting the beginning of August.

This is true, not all fairs are the same. I know ours has some really nice birds but a lot are not what I would take to APA show, I have this thing I like to call integrity. I may not have had a truckload of stellar birds at this weekends show, but at our state fair there are half molted birds, birds with mites, those with mud foot so bad you can't believe the birds could walk looking like they do. I will say, I was very proud to display my Buckeyes. I really like my cockerel and if I can darken up that pullet's babies, she is going to be well worth keeping around. If I could get one more person or a 4h /jr show family interested taking them on, then it was worth the trip and effort that went into it.

I am 64 years old and I remember the Flintstones TV show, the dinosaurs would sound like dogs.
How crazy was that? Ha ha ha

Just a wee bit behind here, but the reason you can feed red cayenne pepper or any peppers with a high capsaisin cointent to birds, is their lack of salivary glands.

Now this sounds really interesting: please explain a little more.

I know why people feed cayenne to poultry. I was hoping to give Lee a chance to answer and further contribute to the conversation, but thanks for looking those links up on Google anyway.

I was asking about why the lack of salivary glands means birds aren't bothered by capsaicin. I suspect it's because it's an oil. The same reason why drinking water when you've eaten something spicy hot won't 'cool' your mouth, it only serves to spread the oil around. (instead, drink milk, as the oil binds to the fat in milk.)

What do you say Lee?
