The building of Pea Palace(Pic Heavy)

All birds sold there had to have avian influenza and NPIP paperwork,,all my purchased birds was kept in the garage in the boxes they came in for at least two days until I completed their pens,,All my birds looked great and from what little time I have been around them since they have been let loose, they all seem very used to people, very healthy, none was flighty or seemed to check for escape routes.I think in time UPS and Opie will be eating from my hand.

Brian,,I'm thinking of putting that purple w/e hen in with my charcoal male,,I also have a cameo w/e hen looking for a pen,,they may both go with my young silver pied male,,,which is the LAST pen I MUST build this spring,,I need a large pen for all my IB's to run in,,and a pied pen,,my charcoal pen wil stay up front on solid concrete. If anything wants to break in that pen,,they will need a jackhammer or dynamite.

I sold 3 IB males and 1 IB B/S male,,$50-$65 a piece,,I didn't need them and didn't want to make a stag pen,they needed a home.

The way Pea Palace East is shaping up,there will be 6 pens used this year for breeding,,Midnight B/S,,Opal B/S,,Bronze,Purple B/S,Pied,and India Blue with 3 diffrent IB males.I will make 3 more pens mainly to keep last years hatched birds and a pen for this summers hatch. This is getting rather drawn out and I hoped to have it done a week ago,but weather and unplanned issues ruined several great building days.Maybe I'm too meticulous, but I grind down every screw that sticks out thru the wood,,I constantly pick up things inside each pen, check and re-check everything.I know I have used 40 pounds of sheet metal screws so far and still need another 20 pounds to finish this side. And I still need to bury the chain link fence around the outside and install a hot wire along the outside to keep climbing vermin away.I want this setup to be impenetrable in the event I am not home for 2-3 days.

Further progress was made yesterday afternoon. We now have the big pen completed except for adding a walk thru door. This pen is 20'x20' on size and will be the future home for the 10 IB Hens I have. There will be 1 regular IB Male,1 B/S India Blue male, and 1 Blue Pied male with this group of hens.Easter Sunday I plan to finish 1 more 10'x20' pen for the few Silver pieds I have. This will be a toal of 6 pens constructed under a 48'x48' square, leaving me room for 3 more pens 10'x30' that can be done later this summer. It's time to get the groups of birds in their respective pens,,maybe the expected FREEZE warning tonight will slow them down some??
I will then get pictures of each pen and birds that occupy them.

Since this thread is slowly getting buried this will be my final update.I now have 5 pens completed with the birds now occupying each for this summers breeding.Although it is only early April with all the nice weather we have been having many times I thought I wouldn't get this done in time.

I constantly find myself picking up any and everything in each pen that is caused from building.Cut off zip ties,,short cut pieces of welded wire from final trimming to fit.Below is a picture of how I attached the sheet metal and the 2"x4" welded wire.I used 2" sheet metal screws to hold the sheet metal onto the 2"x4"'s and used 1" sheet metal screws to hold the welded wire firm.It really goes much faster this way instead of using staples that needs to be pounded in with a hammer.Plus, they can be easily removed later on if a pen size is changed.

Next, every 2" screw has to be ground smooth that comes out the other side of the 2"x4",,another job that goes fast but still is very necessary when some birds want to experience free-flight for the first time in such a large area.If you look closely you can see the burn marks where each screw was ground smooth

And last,,the biggest pen for all the Blues,,regular Blue,B/S Blue,Blue pied, and a Silver pied male. This pen may be divided more in the next few weeks when I complete 2 more small sized 10'x30' pens but at least for now all colors are grouped with the correct breeding males.I would so like to find a quad of Cameo's,,or Peach,,

Very nice

Lots of work, but beautiful results. I am sure everyone will be happy as can be.
