Compost King
Free Ranging
Meat Bird Pen is empty! time to convert it into a Rabbit Pen.
Its full of maggots, mostly the large kind that are not as gross as the small ones. I think its the black soldier fly type of maggots which are perfect for feeding chickens. So my birds feeding off of the compost pile are having field day as I clean this out.
I shoveled out the maggots with my feed scoop that I never use for feed.. I use for scooping manure or compostables in tight spaces that a pitch fork can't get too. Most of this in the photo will be pitch forked but the corners have to be scooped out. Feed scoops are expensive and I never buy them for feed because there are cheaper products to use for that. I use feed scoops to dig in tight spaces. Feed scoops are made with a durable plastic that is perfect for digging compacted composting materials like when I dig out under my deck which is a place I kept chickens that were not heat tolerant. its always 5 or 10 degrees cooler under my deck. I only clean that out once every 5 years and it gets compacted. I have to dig it out laying down and last time I cleaned it out I injured myself and it took 18 weeks to recover. Most of that was me not admitting I am too old to handle loads I handled 20 years ago... I had a beer and I do not drink often so I will ramble here. I thought I could carry large totes full of compacted soil under the deck I dug out. These Totes were probably 250 pounds. when I was 20 that was not too heavy for me... and I am strong and have the muscle to carry that now however my joints can't hack it. I hyper extended an elbow trying to empty out a tote. My new rule is... no lifting anything over 50 pounds.. which is a feed bag weight. They feel as light as feathers to me because I am a large dude but my joints can not handle more. As silly as this sounds, reducing my lifting weight load is one of the hardest things I have ever accomplished. I still get the work out I used to from heavy lifting because I have to make multiple trips. It takes longer to get tasks done now and I am adapting to my new life as "old". or maybe I should say Middle aged.
This is what I use for a feed scoop, a $1 mixing bowl from Dollar Tree. for a smaller scoop I use that $1 Measuring cup that holds up to 2 cups. OK I had a drink and I am a lightweight when it comes to drinking so I have to sign out before I tell everyone I love them lol. I want to have this new Rabbit pen done by Sept but I am slowing down in middle age so mid Sept it will likely be done.
If you have never petted a rex rabbit before I suggest finding one and touching the fur.
