Found a small problem... one rabbit is spilling way too much feed. I need to find out why so I can solve the problem.

I wonder if he's digging in it?

He might be, I am leaning towards the food got wet some how and he is digging out the wet in an attempt to get to dry feed. The problem with my theory is that most of the food I cleaned up was dry, Some may have been wet and then dried because it crumbled easily when I cleaned it.

Water splatter is a bit of a problem in summer but in winter I can close things up more. I am learning all the problems with keeping them on the ground

Yep, I am trying to give them just enough for the day every morning, still learning what that amount is.

I hope having them on the ground works out for you. We have ours in hutches. I have 2 porcelain tiles in each cage...one in the food area & one in their enclosed section, they seem to do great with that setup. If the water issue becomes too much of a hassle, they really can do well off the ground!

We have a rabbit tractor for growing out the kits, but I think we are going to raise it off the ground too...it has wire on the bottom to keep them from digging, so that makes it hard for them to get to the grass and it's a lot work to move them around.
The hutch on the left was one we built for our kids pet rabbits over 20 years ago. I had my husband raise it because it was child height & I didn't want to bend down, I'm getting ...lol We built the one on the right this year. Each hutch has an enclosed section.

My friend uses pallets in her colony to raise everyone off the ground. It’s soggy here about 8 months out of the year

My experience with gravity feeders is rabbits either A) get fat literally eating all day, or B) dig it out and spill it to get to the fresh pellets, like a cat pawing at a gravity fed waterer. We don't do gravity feeders in my barn - we measure feed out for the individual rabbits and free feed hay in case they get snackish or destructive.

@Compost King I use a hay silo for unlimited hay and feed pellets once a day. Our buns only get 1/4 c of pellets, the little guy a bit less, and a big bowl of fresh greens twice a day. They also like to have a small piece of fruit, apples and bananas are the most popular.

Made bugs a chew toy out of lemon branches today he loved it and shredded it to peices and ate it in minutes. It was his first chew toy he loved it. He also picked up on litter training it's been 2 days and no pee and poop outside the litter box!!

Is the hutch in the last picture wire bottomed? How do u keep the rabbits from digging out.
