I hope having them on the ground works out for you. We have ours in hutches. I have 2 porcelain tiles in each cage...one in the food area & one in their enclosed section, they seem to do great with that setup. If the water issue becomes too much of a hassle, they really can do well off the ground!
We have a rabbit tractor for growing out the kits, but I think we are going to raise it off the ground too...it has wire on the bottom to keep them from digging, so that makes it hard for them to get to the grass and it's a lot work to move them around.
The hutch on the left was one we built for our kids pet rabbits over 20 years ago. I had my husband raise it because it was child height & I didn't want to bend down, I'm getting

...lol We built the one on the right this year. Each hutch has an enclosed section.
