The Butterfly Haven

It’s so cool that you raise monarchs! They’re definitely one of my favorites! 😍 Lately I’ve been trying to capture some pictures of them but to no avail yet…This is the only one I’ve gotten so far this season and it’s probably the worst picture I’ve ever taken of them… 🤣View attachment 3236645
I would absolutely love to see your monarchs and the tiny monarch chrysalis!
They are rather sneaky, aren’t they? I don’t end up seeing a ton around here either. But they do lay a ton of eggs, and those i collect to raise!

I will definitely share some photos in the morning. If you ever wanted to, i would be more then happy to give you some advice on raising them. (Eggs to monarch)

If you didn’t want to, though, you could always plant some milkweed (native! Not tropical.) In your yard. Your sure to see a lot then! Thats really such an awesome way to help the population, and, as a bonus, their lovely to see fly around.

Yes, they sure are…I see them soaring through the sky quite often during the summer/fall time during daylight but this year it seems like there’s only a few of them and they seem to be flying around a lot more sporadically than usual, which is kind of odd as I do have and supply plenty of milkweed for them…Any tips/advice you have will always be appreciated!

The chrysalis you see inside the green outline is actually still, relatively small for a chrysalis. The green outline is your average chrysalis. So compared to the one next to it, that one is very tiny! Also, chrysalis outlined in green is a male. Yes, you can sex the chrysalis.

Bonus unrelated picture i felt the need to share. The “red squrriel boxing gloves” he tried beating me up and punching me with his fists. (No, im not joking.) he also pounded his chest like a gorilla. (That part i might have made up)

So beautiful 😍 Thank you for sharing, @Chicken poppy!

I’m moving my Swallowtail Caterpillars and plants they’re on into a screened cage to protect them from predators. There’s been a few who took off without me knowing cause it’s time for them to chrysalis and I don’t want to lose any more of them.

You definitely should. I keep all mine into a protected place, there is absolutely no reason they should wander about the yard as long as they have the necessities. They *will* die. I had about 30 monarch catepillars wandering about, next day, there was only 2.

I never keep the butterflies, just the eggs and caterpillars because there is way to many predators here. After all the monarch caterpillars that end up hatching in the wild, there has been 0 chrysalises wild. i let them go after the big hatch (coming out of the Chrysalis) and obviously once im sure their wings have dried off, their fit for flying, and of course don’t have OE, their free to live their own lives.
