I believe that you are right about his ego getting the better of him. The way I understood it was that he just got caught up in the monent and couldn't resist putting it on.

Yeah and he was obsessed with the deathly hallows and i think he thought that the ring was the ressurection stone.

But it couldnt have been the ressurection stone because it was in the snitch, and dumbledore cracked the stone when he destroyed the horcrux.
 
I think Dumbledore cracked the stone in the ring, and when he realized what it was, then put it in the snitch for Harry to find after he died.
