I'm trying to remember how Trelawney was portrayed in the book. She comes off as a goof in the movie.

Editing to say that I'm just back from the HP Lexicon where is sounds like she was pretty much the same in the books. I had to check there because I couldn't remember "off the top of my head".

She was pretty goofy in the book too. But a lot more of her story is in the book, about how Dumbledore discovered that she does have flashes of real prediction. She's the one who made the prophecy that Snape reported to Voldemort, which caused him to go after Harry. Dumbledore kept her at the school after that to keep her safe.

Is this where old folks come to confess we are Harry Potter fans? I love having a grandson to use as my excuse...

I don't bother to pass my kids off as my excuse for it anymore! It's just very good writing. Sure beats all the teen angst vampire crap out there. There are versions for America and versions for Brits, I'd like to get the British versions and read those next.

I don't think there's very much difference. Just little things ... like some meat head American in publishing decided that "Sorcerer's Stone" would be better that "Philosopher's Stone" without bothering to research. Philosophers in real history were actually the ones who dabbled in alchemy, and the name of the legendary substance (that gave long life) that alchemists were seeking was called philosopher's stone. So that particular publisher meat head made a very big boo boo.

Remember that Dumbledore will explain this later when Harry "dies" in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and the rest will be explained in Snape's memories, also in HP&DH:p2.
