I got ALL my chickens sleeping in the coop tonight!!!

I only had to throw in three of them (well, the first two got almost all the rest in; I have one hen, my brood hen, who sleeps on the backporch instead of with the other chickens; I don't care as long as she's safe!)

Anyway, THEY'RE ALL IN THE HEN HOUSE TONIGHT!!!!

Just in case you couldn't tell; I'm not happy about that or anything. ;-)

Does anyone have a garden?

We've been trying to do a garden for several years now and it has been less and less productive; we have neighbors (not necessarily next door, but ppl who live in the same community we do) who have huge great harvests.
One thing we know reduces our productivity is that we do everything organic and in containers.
Any advice, suggestions on what to grow, ANYTHING would be helpful!!!

This downward spiral is very bad for my desire to start doing a winter garden. :(

So, anything anyone knows, I'd appreciate if you'd share. :)
Some soils are different from each other, and won't grow things. For example, my Grandma can grow THE best green peppers, nice and sweet and big. My Aunt, however, who lives not a mile away, can't grow anything but bitter tiny peppers because of the soil difference. You can send soil samples to somewhere or other (Big help, I know. I can't remember. XD) to get it tested for not much at all.

We grow in pots. I wouldn't send my soil off anyway. I might get a pH test kit from the garden store for next year, if we decide to grow in the dirt. We want to do organic gardening, but we have to broadcast for fire ants. Hooray for living in the South. lol

I know what you mean about soil differences. The reason Vidalia onions ONLY come from Vidalia, GA is b/c the sulfur levels are SO LOW there that the onions grow sweet. (If your Vidalias are coming from somewhere else, then they're imposters!!! lol)

Quote: Well just be careful because it will take over your whole garden... So maybe give it a trellis to climb up or something cause it's a vine... Other than that, it will most likely take over your yard, then your neighborhood (if you live in one) then your state, then the US then North America then the WORLD! :O

My lonely little cucumber vine taking over the world!!!

It sounds like a good idea to plant a row right outside my chicken pen. Then the vine can climb up the fence and the chickens can have whatever grows on their side and I can pick whatever grows on the outside (and whatever grows too high or ripens too fast for them to get to). Then I can pickle, ferment, and otherwise make happy my harvest.

When is it you're supposed to plant these world-dominating cucumber vines?

I love paper mache! And planting a cucumber vine right next to the chicken run is a good idea!

I am making a replica of a Cherokee Indian village for school and it is SOOOOOOOO much fun!!!

Oh, I like paper mache too! It's so fun to get messy and have something beautiful to show for it. lol

I imagine you could plant almost any vine just outside of the fence and train it to climb the fence.
The chickens might appreciate green beans, ??? IDK. Can't think of any other vines, but ... Oh, grapes...
