The city says! What do you think?

So I called the city of joliet to verify if I can have chickens--because the ordinance I found refering to fowl basically stated that fowl can not defecate on other property or fly about. But the city person I talked to refer to these parts of the ordinance

47-5.1 PERMITTED PRINCIPAL USES
No land shall be used or occupied and no building or structure shall be designed, erected, altered, enlarged,
occupied or used other than for one of the following uses:
(d) agricultural uses, provided no retail sales are regularly made on the premises and provided
further that no building housing farm animals is located on the premises;

(4) agricultural uses not meeting the requirements of Section 47-5.1(d), provided that a building
housing farm animals shall be located not less than five hundred (500) feet from any other lot
located in a residential district;

Well I live on a smaller 80x120 lot --no way I can meet the 500ft rule. But do you think I can get anywhere with these ordinances?

She also said they get alot of complaints about backyard chickens!! Do you think I could get this changed or? I am soooo new to this. Thanks!

Sometimes you can get a varience on the setback rule...BUT I think you have to have permission from both/all adjoining neighbors..could be wrong..i am kinda new to this also. look in the ordinances and zoning sections (if it shows zoning) in here www.municode.com on the first page click on free municple code search library then enter your state then choose which town.
put the word livestock or chickens or fowl or poultry in the search box at the top of the page and see what it brings up.

Oh I just noticed the reference to farm animals in your post....most of the time chickens are lumped under that....

Did you ever have any success with the City of Joliet? I just got a letter telling me mine were illegal. Ironically, I thought I lived in Plainfield, because that's what my address says ...
