You guys missed out on some giant turkey legs today at the fair!

Is that the Alameda County Fair!?!?!

Chickens from that fair about 16 years ago lead to me owning BYC!

(my brother got three straggly hens the day it closed, then talked me into getting chickens, then the rest is history!)

Out of curiosity, is there a way to see how many articles have 5 stars, how many have 4, etc.?

Great question!!!

The query on the database to filter the data to only coops is a little beyond me, but here are the ratings across all articles in our system... most of which are coop articles:

Star Rating - #
5 3389
4 1128
3 1576
2 1175
1 505

Whoa, that’s a lot of 5 stars!

I wonder if that’s because people avoid rating lower quality articles (lots of 5 star ratings on a good featured article), or if raters are too generous.

Maybe most articles are just that good. :p

Sorry, I should clarify! That's the NUMBER of ratings submitted, not the number of articles with those ratings! So, there are 3,389 5-star ratings, not 3389 articles with 5-stars.

But, the reason there are so many more 5-star ratings (not 5-star articles) is a combo of both of those factors you mentioned, but also that we tend to FEATURE and promote the best articles, so those get the most views / exposure, and then get the most # of ratings.

You asked
how many articles have 5 stars, how many have 4, etc.?
Well, that's a tricky question depending on how we round the numbers... but if I use the sql query:

"SELECT rating_avg, COUNT(rating_avg) AS average_count FROM `xf_nflj_ams_article` WHERE category_id IN (17,18,19,20) group by ROUND(rating_avg,1) ORDER BY `rating_avg` DESC"

we get:

... but if we change the "round" decimal_places to "0", we get:

Ok, and since I'm running data... here are the members doing the most REVIEWS vs. just doing ratings:

(To be clear, we don't have any requirements on ratings vs. reviews. In some cases having peeps spend more time on reviews is better, but in other cases it's better to just quickly go through and give just a rating).

Ah, that makes more sense. Just keeping your data analysis skills sharp. ;)

So in a nutshell, the average rating that is given is 5 stars because good articles get more exposure.
But the average coop article rating is 2.5, yes?

What is the weight calculation based on?
