The Coop that may never be...

I don't even try to get a permit cause if the town doesn't know they won't bother you, I have ducks and will have had them for a year in August and no com Plaints just don't tell anyone and keep the coop hidden and nobody will care.

Our zoning refers to domesticated pets, but does not define what is considered domesticated pet. I hope it all works out for you, it so much fun to watch them.

So are you saying you felt comfortable getting chickens under that definition? Our city refers to chickens as domesticated, but i don't know if I can link domestic and customary. However it seems more important that an animal be the former over the latter!!

We just moved our Carolina jasmine to a new spot, beautiful, yellow, trumpet-shaped blooms, blooms spring and fall--and boy does it get thick and stays covered in leaves. i can see a few trellis' or wires string around you cute coop, covered in jasmine. Maybe some bushes in a few places that would also provide shade for your girls. Go for quite breeds, think Australorps not Rhode island reds, or African ground parrots,LOL- hey it worked once. I would leave the "Playhouse" for the kids to use while you let the plants take over. By that time the developer should forget about it:fl. He's really only wanting to keep selling houses there, if he can't see a problem then it does not exists, or at least I hope so for you. The fence is great idea, and love the tool shed in front idea--but none of those is cheap. I'd start with plants--then maybe a fence--check your HOA rules--no point in wasting money, get a fence that complies, you could leave room between the "Playhouse" and plants to put in the fence when you can.

If you go with the trellis idea, plant grapes instead-food for you AND the chickens......

If all of your neighbors are excited about chickens you might be better off trying to get a petition going that would lead to a change in your covenants . . . I don't know exactly what's involved in that, but I do know it would be heartbreaking for you and your kids to go through all the work of getting and raising up chicks, or getting a flock of hens, and then being made to get rid of them because your HOA won't allow them. Especially since it looks like everyone really can see your business with the lack of fencing and landscaping.

Great coop, sorry about the problems you are having, don't have anything helpful to add there. I also loved African ground birds, can't wait til hubby is up to share. I hope it works out.

Freedom is just a word to most people. I dont know why they would sign it away. So it is with Covenants run by a board. Majority rules. There are no minority rights. It is why I will never live in a subdivision. The covenants are there to protect silly people from silly actions.

Here's what I'm thinking about your situation. Why not move the coop CLOSER or next to the back of the house? Leave it painted as it is, install a small section of privacy fence from the corner of the house to just beyond the coop and plant a fast-growing decorative vine or shrub next to the fence. You could turn the corner with the fencing, too, which would then be one wall of the chicken's run. Or,,
could you install a pop door in the back wall of your garage, put the coop in the garage, or build a smaller one, and only have the run in the backyard, outside the garage? I like the colors of your coop, but maybe not in that residential setting. Sorry. Chickens are very quiet and just a few chickens means it really doesn't take much to keep the area clean. Good luck.

Good luck with your coop and chickens! Now I know why I live in the country! If someone told me I had to paint the coop to match the house, I'd take out a second mortgage if I had to, and paint the darned house yellow and orange! Can't have chickens, only domestic birds?? I'd buy a couple of pairs of Moluccan Cockatoos! Ya think chickens make noise???

Guess I'm just spiteful that way, don't play well with others, so I'll just stay here in the boondocks!

Good luck!
