Not that my opinion is anything you should take seriously, because I am an emotionless mass of dissent, contradiction and robot unicorns.

It's nice that you're happy for him. I hope that your friendship may last for many long decades to come :p

:lau My first stepmom was a diehard, red, white and blue patriot queen. A little bit may have rubbed off on me, aided by my time in JROTC and my dad starting out in the National Guard. I tend to get a little teary over things like this.

Understandable. To each his own. :p
The only military people I am even vaguely related to are my aunt's in-laws. They were navy medics back in world war 2, or the civil war, or something against the Soviet Union post-1960. I never bothered clarifying with the details :p They have a nice apartment and healthcare now, but apart from that and the odd story there's not much to it. (The apartment is not so nice when one considers my aunt and uncle and their son until recently also live there along with their brother, his wife and two children when they visit twice a year from Melbourne. And at one point also my mother and me.)

My mom was in the Navy, my dad was in the Marine Corp. My mom's dad was army, and I think on my dad's side his grandfather was in the airforce?

Family histories are interesting. My paternal grandparents were peasants and my mum's father was a railway worker. I am not of royal blood but it's not a bad thing in the slightest. I would be very happy to become half the worker any of those who came before me were. But I'm pretty useless when it comes to those kinds of things :p

Me neither. It's not like ancestry.com would have any records for all their flashy adverts. I searched my name and the only entry to come up was me.
