“Mother!” Timmy skipped down the stairs “Eliza say’s she shan’t eat because she has a headache”
“Very well, come to the table, the meat is getting cold” Mrs. Maurray sat down at the long wooden table and Timmy sat down on the other end.
“Mother when shall father be back from London?” Timmy asked, helping himself to a generous helping of potatoes.
“Supposedly one week from tomorrow, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was longer, you know that whenever he is with his relatives they stretch his visits as long as they can”
“Of course they do! Who wouldn’t want to spend time with the richest man in town? Their probably just trying to wheedle money out of him anyway” Timmy said in disgust
“Timothy! Don’t say such dreadful things about your relatives!” Mrs. Maurray said sharply
“Well it’s true, don’t you remember last year Aunt Cornelia was trying to get him to fund her orphanage and Uncle Ben was trying to get him to pay for his new Horse. Good thing father is so stingy or we’d all be broke by now. It will all probably be ruined someday when Eliza goes off and marries some beggar-”
“Timothy! That will be quite enough!” Mrs. Maurray stood up and left the room. Timothy helped himself to another piece of meat.
Eliza rang the school bell and all of the students filed out of the school house. Eliza picked up her books and walked outside, Charlie Burns was waiting for her outside, and he clearly expected her to let him walk her home. She tried to look like she didn’t notice him and walked in the other direction.
“Miss Maurray!” he called, she sighed and turned towards him. The last thing she wanted was to walk the long three miles back to her house with Charlie by her side.
“Mr. Burns, how kind of you to come by the school house for me, but really it was unnecessary” Eliza said as sweetly as she could, but even still her voice had an irritated edge to it. However Charlie didn’t seem to notice.
“You didn’t expect me to let you walk all the way back into town by yourself did you? Ah but never mind, you know that I am really just coming as an excuse to spend time with you, I really enjoy our little walks Eliza” He looked at her as if he was expecting her to express mutual feelings, which she did not. He reached out to take her books but she ignored him and quickened her pace.
“So Lizzie I hear that-” Charlie began
“My name is Elizabeth, only my friends call me Lizzie” Eliza said
