The animals are in good health. They are kept in the small cages, day in and day out. I'm sure they're removed for cleaning. The hen is given a "treat" by pulling the chord when she was being trained. Now that the hen has learned what to do, pull the chord each time the song ends, she will receive a small treat (her food rations). By her pulling the chord each time and scratching, she could injure her feet, ruin her nails by continuous scratching to the point of bleeding. I have seen this done before with the birds, in my case it was a rooster, but the other animals I'm sure are in a similar situation.

not always are birds trained in such a way,
there are other means to train an animal and not always cruel.
