I have a Black Copper Marans who has been quite the deadbeat. She laid an egg labor day weekend. Laid an egg in early November. Then, nothing more until today!

I bought a chick to replace her, and recently moved the chicks out to a tractor next to the big girls' pen. Maybe the deadbeat was threatened by her replacement.

Wow - the size of that egg makes me cringe!! Good luck keeping her honest.

Actually, every egg she ever lays is this big. In fact, this was on the small side at 2 5/8 oz.

I do have small hands, so that does exaggerate the egg a bit.

Here's one from last year, with a regular grocery store egg for comparison. I can't remember if the white egg was large or extra large.

Well, . . . if you could get her fertilized, I'd breed that girl for the size of the egg! The Marans eggs aren't so impressive in size.

What does concern me is that she may be having a laying problem, thus the size of the egg. How old is she?

I'm not sure how old she is- I bought her last July as an adult. I suspect she's probably at least 2. She laid every other day until the first weekend of September, then stopped completely. Then, she laid an egg in early November. Every single egg she's ever laid has been that size, even when she was going every other day.

Her "replacement" is also a BCM, but I'm about 80% sure that "she" is really a HE, so getting fertile eggs may be a possibility at some point.
