The dog got out and......

So, my husband accidentally left out back door open and our Golden Retriever got out. She's a four year old rescue with epilepsy that we've had for six months. The chickens have only been home two weeks. Anyway, I have the Eglu Go and had closed the run for the night and had opened the back to pet them. As anyone who's seen the Go knows, it's on the ground. She got out, ran to the coop and stuck her head in. Ethel, our Jersey Giant, flew the coop, literally, and my Golden didn't chase her but responded to be telling her to get in. I caught Ethel, put her back, talked softly to each of them and pet them. So, though this was a bad situation I think it had a good outcome?? She didn't chase, she sniffed which scared the girls but she left when I yelled at her. She could have gone after the freed chicken. I'm just so worried that the girls are freaked out. Ugh!

Good dog well done. The girls will get over it. Mine used to freak out everytime my dog ran past them going to his favorite tree. They ignore him now.

My dogs sniff at the birds through the plastic run fence. A few well placed pecks from the girls keep my big one back,but all bets are off with my yappy mini pin.The pin wants some chicken BAD.

My Jack Russell/Boston mix would love some chickens but she's our most trained, obedient dog. The golden surprised me. I actually closed my eyes because I was sure she was going to chomp one. Guess she's more trained than I previously believed. Thank goodness the girls are getting big. Soon they will be able to issue their own warnings. Ha ha

Phew! i was afraid this was going to be one of those stories with a very bad ending. Thank goodness your Golden is a very good girl.

I have a golden ret x lab. ret mix. She chased the adult chickens ONCE, and after a smack on the flank and a yell, she's never touched them. She doen't even look at them, and that's pretty good for a bird dog. The hens don't really mind her, although the younger ones scatter like she's going to eat them. I swear she laughs when that happend!!

When we get our chicks we want to introduce them to our two labs immediately. We would like for the chickens to be able to free range in our yard at some point so we need our dogs to not chase them. I am hoping that by introducing them from the start they will get used to them and I would like for them to help protect them.
