The dog was back this morning - Our Sheriff is awesome, Semi Update #1

Quote:
I have some heavy duty fencing ready to install, but have been waiting for the weather to warm up. It was really cold out here today, and was rainy yesterday. I'm hoping it will be better tomorrow. - Somehow I have a feeling that he will eventually make it back over to my yard. Moment he does, he will be out of the neighborhood for good.

I don't fault the dog at all. I fault the owner for not keeping him in his yard.

I am glad I had my camera handy.

So glad to hear that no chickens were lost. I, myself, have a husky. I am sure to keep him in his run when I can't supervise. He is a good boy (great with cats, but have never let him have the chance with chickens). He can be quite a stinker, though -- quite smart, almost manipulative. Our neighbors just adopted a 3 year old husky. They were not familiar with the breed and he was over bugging my chicken and could fit through the cat door in the chicken coop. I couldn't believe he fit through it -- not very big door!
Well, I think/hope the neighbors understand now that huskies have to be tied or in a run if not supervised. They don't listen when called, and they will wander. After returning him for the third time and telling the neighbors he found my chickens, he has not been back over. Every time I let my chickens out, I make sure I can see the neighbor dog is tied out. Kodiak (our dog) is more skiddish than the neighbor's dog and afraid of getting hurt (i.e. scratched by cats or pecked by chickens), but I still would not trust him. So I am thankful that the neighbors are putting some effort in. I feel for you. All I could think about was what am I going to do when he gets a chicken -- nice to see the steps you have taken.

Thank goodness he is friendly and you could grab him to send him back home. He is a gorgeous dog looks more Malamute to me.

People just tick me off when they will not keep their animals at home. My neighbor just lost his dog because it was not friendly enough to grab and was caught digging into someone's chicken run. Guy did not even care his dog was shot.

*sigh* good luck with this one.

I'm pretty sure it's a husky. I've known a few other huskies over the years and they generally all seemed to be about this size. Knee to thigh high.

Back when I worked in retail I saw a guy walking his dog. It looked like a gigantic Siberian husky. That dog was able to stand up on his hind legs and flop his arms over the shoulders of his owner and look him face to face. That guy was around 6' tall. The dog was just HUGE. I had to run out and ask what the breed was. He was a malamute.

I would have a hard time shooting a dog or a cat. I really do love animals (despite the fact that I will eat my extra roosters).

Semi-update #1

Had an interesting conversation with the neighbors that live on the other side of the dog owners this morning.

They have witnessed this dog literally tearing apart the owner's own chickens. The owner apparently doesn't care. So to everyone who said it was the dog the first time around, my apologies. It very well could have been. Though if it was, I am still unsure why he didn't attack any of the others.

The dog owner brought home yet ANOTHER pig this week! So now there is 2 in his yard, along with their big hutch of bunnies... which they let out and are now taking refuge under the shed of the neighbors that I talked with this morning. He told them that if their kids wouldn't take care of the rabbits, just to leave them be and he would personally feed and take care of them. He's had wild bunnies live under his shed before.

I also found out that the parcel the dog owners are on is just around 1 acre. You need a minimum of 2 (we have 2.5) to keep chickens or pigs. They apparently had a goat for a while, but it disappeared. Perhaps the dog ate it.

The moment the dog is seen on my property I will leash him and have the Sheriff come and get him.

ETA, I can't see all what goes on at the dog owner's house. They are sort of kitty-corner behind us, and there are a lot of trees inbetween them and I. I'm glad I was able to hear what's been going on there from the other guy.

Poor dog. Some people should not own husky's (or malamutes) or for that matter any animal at all. It sure sounds like the neighbors have more problems than just letting the dog roam.

I applaud you for not killing the dog. The dog deserves to be taken to the Humane Soc where a proper home will be found; someone with experience with this breed. I hope you don't loose any chickens in the process of getting this dog caught in your yard. Good luck and good sherriff

You know, a lot of folk are ignorant of the responsibilities that come along with owning animals. It drives me nuts sometimes. I think I may shoot a public service announcement/commercial and see if I can get the local TV stations to air it around the evening news broadcasts.
