Life expectancy should be 3-5 years or more, but that depends on how often the hens lay, whether or not you take their eggs away, stress levels, etc. etc.
I do have some pens that have only males in them and they get along fine. I've read that same sex pairs can live together in harmony. But they should be in opposite-sex pairs. As for having 1 male and 2 females, that should be okay, but one female might 'pair up' with the male and then they might start attacking the other female. It's safer to have pairs of them.
You can leave them together in a group for quite a while, mine are usually at least 8 weeks old before I separate them out. I think quaillady does let her's pick their mates, I just play matchmaker and pick mates for them
