The down low on roosters...

My older roosters never quit crowing. They don't crow so competitively, just like they don't mate so aggressively as they age, but around 4 am my place still has all the boys singing the good morning song

. My birds also crow when the neighbors turn lights on, or I turn the porch light on. Or a loud car or motorcycle drives by. Or the dogs start barking. Or the moon is full......

yep yep yep
I will prob always have a roo or two here just because for sitting with the ladies all day I cant always do it and they do protect and alarm warn and call. Noisy but effective.

No. They crow. Some not as frequently as others. My rooster crows in the morning when he thinks it's time to get let out of the run. I don't hear him much throughout the rest of the day. If you're worried about crowing or having fertile eggs, I would suggest not keeping him. No reason to stress yourself out unnecessarily. Also, when he reaches breeding age, he may be aggressive with your hens. Hormonal young roosters can be a bit rough until they figure things out or an older hen puts them in their place.

I have three roosters now. The two in the coop crow more frequently than the one nearer the house. Buff doesn't start crowing until day light, he is a very considerate rooster.

In WV I had a rooster that slept in a big walnut tree about 50 yards from the house. When he was young he only crowed before daybreak. But, as he matured he crowed all day and all night. If a dog barked, lights came on, a door slammed, when owls hooted, crickets chirped, fire flies flashed. He became chicken soup to save us from the insane asylum.
