The download ruined my computer.... ???

Yeah, saw that one once before. It was so obviously `Click Bait' that I just passed it by and, it only showed up that once (couple of months back). Anyway, `click-bait', i.e., any `ad/message' one feels somewhat compelled to `click'-on should simply signal one's bull-poop detector The examples SS'ed above emanate from (not directly served by) the same source: Mindspark Interactive Network which, in turn, is a subsidiary of Barry Diller's (HSN fame) former company: IAC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IAC_(company) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindspark_Interactive_Network,_Inc. Most of these, if one actually downloads the `tool' will install some variant of the ASK (kind fo search engine) TOOLBAR. The most common sources are freeware media players & from ORACLE Corp.- when one updates one's JAVA installation (or installs some `free' music player, etc.) - it is important to UNCHECK the INSTALL ASK TOOLBAR (opt-out of everything, dear friends...). Why would a respectable software giant like Oracle try to slip this PUP (not Really a virus & not Really malware but, rather, PUPware - Potentially Unwanted Program). Advertising payments are, in large measure, based on user response (clicks) so, Oracle gets a cut of the ASK clicks - kinda like Google's deal with the guys above:
In April 2011, IAC extended the deal with Google to hand over all search advertising on Ask.com and other IAC search products to the search giant, which was worth $3.5 billion in 2007, to end on March 31, 2016.[7]
This PUP, if installed, can result in ads appearing on webpages where no ads should appear, it can `arrange' search results to reflect advertiser's paid placements (Google became so popular, so fast, in the first place as it didn't play that game &, if one takes care, it can be forced to still behave like it used to). Nielsen will pay one $5 to record one's Television habits - these folks just slow your machine loading ads while skimming $ by monitoring your use patterns in order to load even more ads. For those `infected' with some ASK toolbar, or other: http://malwaretips.com/blogs/mindspark-toolbar-removal/ Ancillary Purgatives: CCleaner: http://www.piriform.com/blog/2014/2/25/ccleaner-v411 Jetclean: http://www.bluesprig.com/jetclean.html MalwareBytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/lp4/?gclid=CL3fn7LUn70CFc_MtAodTRsA5Q I always leave the adverts turned on, on BYC, as the kitty must be fed. I've yet to run into any ads (legit or otherwise), on BYC, that didn't require a user to actually invite the vampire in. to their computer. by `clicking'. If it's not poultry related, why would I bother? (the `inadvertent rollover' Adobe Flash trash is another matter entirely). Good OLD Google: https://www.google.com/?complete=0&ion=0&num=50 (autocomplete-OFF/Instant-OFF/Number of search results per page (I like 50)). If you don't need Google to finish your typing for you and you don't need to have google guess what you are searching for.
