Hey all,

We have a creek that runs through our yard, and we were thinking ducks! I am leaning over to mallards. Any ideas???

1. Do you want a breed that flies?

2. Meat, eggs, or multipurpose?

3. Do you want to breed them?

4. Do you want seasonal layers or constant layers?

5. Whats your favorite color/colors?

6. Bantam, Medium, or Heavy?

I dont really mind for meat or eggs, we have 17 ladies for that hahaha! Flying would be something to consider because they need to get away from dangers, right? Noise wise I am not sure. They would sleep in a pen at night, and be let out on the creek during the day.

Flying will not necessarily help them get away from all dangers. There are still hawks and such that can kill them on a creek. I've lost two birds on the creek during the day, and both could fly. However in your case you might want to get a bantam breed, calls, black east indies, etc. Mallards will also work, your choice.

Well Muscovies are the quietest, they don't quack, they hiss. Other than that, all breeds descending from the mallard (which is mostly every domesticated breed) sound the same. Call ducks do quack a lot more because thats what they were made for "Call" ducks.

I am fosho not getting scovies. I am thinking cayuga or east indies. How hardy are these breeds? Would they be safe swimming through a creek during the day?
