The Duck Thread

...Ugh, wish I could help! If I was in your situation, I'd do exactly what you've already done - do the best I could, and take to BYC! Sending hugs to you and your duckie.... I hope she turns out okay. Hopefully, some more experienced BYC members can help.

My Pekin duck has a hole in the under side of her foot (not the webbing) there is a swelling around the area about the size of a dime. The little hole looked like it might be a sticker, she was limping a good bit. I soaked her foot in Epsom salts for about 30 minutes and looked at it again. It looked cleaner but no better. Since I thought it might be a sticker, I used a needle and tried to get it out (can't believe she sat still for this!!), I got a little puss out but not enough to count for the amount of swelling and the dark spot was still there.  I soaked the foot again and put Neosporin on it (the non pain killer type) and put a bandaid on it. I'll check it again tomorrow.

My husband thinks that it needs to be lanced, but I'm not so sure. Any advice?

I really laughed at myself, putting a BANDAID on a duck's foot!

Thanks in advance!
Mandy

Sounds like you're working on it just fine... just repeat tomorrow and each day until you remove all the chunks out...

Swelling around the area could just be tissue irritation/damage... lancing probably won't help much since poultry infections tend to be hard or chunky/cheesy rather than liquids...

ETA: might try tweezers instead of a needle to pull pieces out, btw... good luck and hope it clears up quick... :)

Thanks! I was hoping I didn't have to cut on her. I did have tweezers pulling tiny pieces out along with the needle. But it is still brown down in the hole. The hole is no bigger than a pin head. I plan on keeping them in their enclosure tomorrow so I can get my hands on her a few times during the day maybe it will help her to heal.

I am running out of Epsom salts, can I use just regular salt?

Thanks again!

Thanks! I am sure she will get better, she has only been limping a day or so, so I hopefully caught it early. We'll keep at it, it's such a tiny hole, but it's obviously bothering her.

All responses are welcome!

Thanks again.

I wouldn't use regular salt, maybe just plain warm water sometimes? If possible, I would get more epsom salts... and clear iodine (also called colorless or iodine tincture), that helps a lot after the soaks and pokes...

EEEEEEEEE I know this duckling. He is exhibiting a very big eyed, full frontal face, vocal performance of BABY BURD! He knows we know that he is very cute. Yes. Fact.
