The Duck Thread

Yeah just talked to hubby about it. Going to section off section of main duck house for them. It wont be the nicest of shelters but I'll figure something out. One of my KC didnt show up at dark tonight. I know she was there at 530. Do kc go broody very often. Shes from a local farm not hatchery. I didnt see any signs of going broody but I wasn't home all weekend so I could have missed it. My Muscovy in cement culvert is definitely full on broody. Kinda curious how many eggs she has. The other one in coop is still thinking about it. I haven't had any issues with predictors for half a year so I'm hoping she turns up. Going to go search again. Didnt see any feathers or anything either in yard.

Good to hear about the boys... who cares what it looks like, functional is what matters... :)

I actually have good news!!! I was thinking for sure with the month I'm having that my kc was gone. Its down pouring out side but I looked again outside and found her back a bit into trails behind house!!!! She got wrapped up in some old grapevine and couldn't get loose. Just far enough I couldn't hear her from yard. There isnt an inch of me that isn't soaking wet but I found her!!!!

Glad you found her!! I had a Call disappear yesterdqy and luckily showed up this morn... we think she got startled by the neighbors dog and landed too far to get back before dark... dog issue has been resolved, thankfully...

How would you go about seeing how much she weighs? But she doesn't look underweight

Put her on a scale... inside a tote or something similar if she won't stand still... with all the feathers, just looking won't show if they're underweight... you should be able to feel the keel, but it shouldn't stick out far, that would be underweight... someone had a visual chart, but I can't remember who...

Thanks, but only 3 out of seventeen hatched. A thermomerter broke, and about 7 or eight eggs with fully devolopped ducks died, so I assumed it was from mercury poision.

Unless you were using your grandparents thermometer, not likely at all... thermometers haven't contained mercury in a long, long time...

I can't even handle how cute ducklings are!

Still trying to figure out names for these shiny green beautiful birds!

It was @casportpony

@yoopergirl1211. Those babies are precious. Can not wait to see them feathered out. Will they be the size of a call? I'm glad the other EI are not showing signs of illness.

Linda

Sorry missed this. They should be about call size. If I understand correctly they are Bantam instead of call so they might be a little bigger and without the cute little call head.

I'm not sure yet. I do have a covered run right now but I was almost thinking about keeping these guys in a separate house/run with the other Bantam/call ducks when they are older. I'm nervous about clipping wings because I've never done it. I know they grow back at least if I screw it up lol. If I do clip what age should I do it?

I was really scared the first time I did it, I went out and bought a VERY good pair of scissors, and watched videos on YouTube over and over. I had no help, so I wrapped the ducks in a towel, and pulled out on wing at a a time, clipped, checked for sudden death by first time wing clipper, and was relieved at how easy it was. Like a haircut.
