The Duck Thread

Yeah, they are in it for the mula, not a pet like us. They're living conditions are, well, gross.. We hand raised both our chicken's & duck's.. They
are just to much fun to hang out with.. We want to be able to check on them when needed.. I don't keep the chicken's that are so freaked out by us being around.. We always re-home those to people that will keep them as pet's and don't care much to hold them like us.. We go in at night when the mom is raising the chick's and carry them around. They don't like it, but they get a personal tour of our property.. Then they figure out they are not going to get hurt.. It's funny, the last flock we raised for friend's had one chicken that thought we were going to kill her. It was awful, I felt so bad for her.. But from day 5-7 she would run away when we would go in to hand feed treat's.. We let all of our chicken hen's go broody once.. We have 2 that we let raise more than one because when they see us they come running to me.. So did the babies.. Now the babies are good with eating from our hand.. Same with our duck's.. They don't mind being handled, we give then a handful of kitty kibble every morning.. They come running & if I'm not out their to feed them they let us know they are waiting..

What breed's of duck's do you have ?
I have muscovy. I have toyed with the idea of adding other kinds, but these are so quiet. A very big contradiction to my guineas. So, not sure if I want to add a lot of noise right now or not?

The stink factor is why we don't use this.. But the fly preditor has worked best.. From last year more than have as many flys..

Where do you get your fly preditors?  I think i would like to try both! the Flys are unreasonable right now!

Here is a referral number that you can give them when you order.

From what we've discovered, they actually stay near the poop/ mess. Not free flying around like the house flys. And they're tiny tiny.

My Muscovys are such big fly preds I'd worry they would also eat the fly predators one reason I have tried them.

We usually throw them into the wood piles or hiding places around our property.. A friend put's her is a cup with a screen over it.. That way the other bug's or lizards won't eat the pupil..They look like a tiny ant when they emerge from their cocoon.. . This species have been effective.. We like them..

Thank's.. We have the duck's in the frontyard & the chicken's on the long side of our home.. The top is covered with bird netting..
The duck's have a ton of shade and a horse trough for their swimming.. They don't always get in the trough, "pond".. So we have the roasting pan & a deeper bucket for them to eat the treats out of & give them fresh clean water daily.. Our water that comes out of our garden hose is filtered.. They are fenced off with 1/2 of the front yard. We have get-to-gethers here on a weekly basis during the cooler months.. We built a large front paved area with a deep fire pit for cooking over.. The duck area is a bonus, along with the above garden bed's I will post up a photo later.. I need to go to the pet store and add in some fish for them.. On that list of things to do..
The poop get's watered into to grass and plant area.. We love having them & the people that walk by say they enjoy seeing them.. Our neighbor's & i would rather hear duck's than that of city noises.. Planes, sirens, traffic & the light rail.. We live by A.S.U. In Tempe.. Oh and the fireworks during their games.. We had our property certified by the National Wildlife Federation.. We have the plaque at the entrance of our property. It is funny when passers by see & hear the duck's if I see the I say, " they are highly trained duck's" it is hard not to laugh & hold a straight face, knowing they are not migrating duck's.. I have posted the plaque up before but here it is again.

Wow, all your birds are stunning.

I use these they really work well,

You have to dump them about 1X a month or boy do they get stinky full of flies, then add more attractant but well worth it then at end of season I scrub them out let them dry and put up for next year. I dig a hole and pour the liquid and dead flies into it cover and done.

Where would one find this nifty item?

Our ducklings are about a month old now, we just acquired them. We have been debating on the breed, any ideas/ thoughts on what you think they might be? I'm pretty sure we were told buff orpington.. could be wrong. Or maybe they are still too young to tell? Any help would be great!

Let's not even get started talking about pet dumping!! We have student's that just leave when they are done with school and don't take their pet's.. Yes even duck's.. But we also have a certain person that brings spay-neuter re-release cat's here on our block AND neighborhood.. It is so awful.. No one want's to feed them, you can not catch them to help them if they are sick.. Their poop is out of control.. No one cleans up the poop.. Actually, I told one old neighbor that if he is going to feed them, HE need's to go to our homes & pick up their poop!!! He was like, "HUH, I didn't think of that" I want to Puch him in the neck.. Some people just don't think.. They have been sick to the point of our cat's getting sick from them.. They have worms, which I have tried to teat with D.E. seems to help.. Finally I got a hold of one that had the clipped ear, and get a hold of her when I feed my cat's.. She doesn't like it, but oh well.. I get to make sure she is ok & she is coming around.. I will get a photo of her, she is so cute!! All of her paws have 6 toes..
Our cat's have allowed her on our property, so we keep her.. We named her Julie..
Now, I have meet a few people that have been in a situation where the shelters have no room to take them in.. Honestly, I came home and found a dog in our backyard one day.. She now has her forever home.. So, for the pet it worked out.. Then we rescued a dog from a rescue, that was rescued from the desert.. Once we got him home he only lived 3 week's.. He must of been starving & had heat exhaustion. Or the neuter surgery.. Not sure but he suffered & cried, stopped eating, till I found a vet that would see how bad he was.. And put him to rest.. We only had him for a short time, but he bonded with us.. This girl of ours came from the same place and has issues, but boy do we love her.. She want's to eat the kitty, but we are making progress..

German shepherd!!! (Girly squeal eeeeeeeeee!!!! Looove!!!!) My shep Caesar is the love of my life! Our neighbors told us that when this house was empty for 2 years, it became a dumping ground for a slew of animals. They actually adopted most of them including a duck, dog, and even a horse! Laughingly, they joked that it was our turn... Hmmm. I'll never understand how people do it, but we're gonna take what shows up! The Canadian geese have been the only challenge, but since they took over as flock caretakers... The legal paperwork and monitoring has been worth it.! I will draw the line at anything larger than a dog, but my neighbors have volunteered to step in!!! Although there was some eye rolling on her husbands part when she said that! But thank goodness for them, they have helped me with all the fowl, introduced me to the wardens, and even are helping with the ppwk for the geese. When we found out we were going to have to chain link the back yard in, they told my husband to just have a bbq and they'd get the people. I'm from the city, so I'm not used to this...still makes me cry.

Talk about BBQ, here is another one of our girl's.. Do you see the drool?

She is a rescue.. We can't count how many animals that are rescued.. It is just a normal thing around here.. & if they are not tossed over our wall, we get emails or phone call's.. A new animal shelter just opened up down the street. We have their number on speed dial..
