The Duck Thread

EEEEEE!!!! @jessica89 They are so cute!! And don't worry about Winnie liking Luci so much that you get shunned. Lol. I've done everything I can do to gain our ducks favor, but when my daughter comes out or they hear her voice, BOOM, I'm chopped liver. awesome. That initial bond has proven possible to break! And yeah, I know.... Mother of the year award, right here.

@pairaducks Having horses all my life, before I actually looked into stall mats, I had it stuck in my mind that they were cost prohibitive. Even though I now know they wouldn't aren't, I still can't imagine cutting them! More power to the people that have! Lol.
I went to Home Depot and got an indoor/outdoor mat that I put in their run. Didn't even get it for easy cleaning purposes at the time. Now that I'm the latest to fall prey to the muddy bug pit in front of their house, I've gotten a larger rug from Walmart, hoping to use less water. I like it better than the HD one because it has a rubber edge. I needed a size in between what walmart had, so I opted for the smaller. Wouldn't have to cut the nice edge off that way. I've made up for the small size by adding the HD rug to it. Now I'll just pull them out, go to a dry part of the lawn and rinse. I'll post pics if you'd like, but all I did was puzzle piece them in. Poor planning on my part made our doors and ceiling a bit too small and low for maneuvering stall mats. If you do decide to go with them, our TSC has them out front and I want to say they're $30ish? My only concern would be them getting too hot. We don't have any trees in our yard, so shade is from a shade cloth. On the fence about the cloth actually helping enough. Our Drake has never been good with high temps. 95* in the brooder was too much right off the bat, so hot stall mats might be the end of him. ANYHOO! Just thought I throw another option out there. If I had shade, I'd consider putting up with the stall mat/small door tag team vs me, throw down! They're pretty sweet.

I know this has already been painfully long, cuz that seems to be how I roll, but.... Quick question. (Promise

) Marigolds also have bug repellant properties. Though I could plant some around the whole compound. I figured I'd either be offering an all you can eat buffet or killing them with poisonous plants. (I'll check the bad plant list.) Bad idea either way... Have DM I've already put down, but only once. Gonna gonna go do that now. Other than the already mentioned traps, strips, predators, etc, is the DM or Seven dust my best option. (Guess that was quick for me.

@lynnhill - Thank you ! They are my little babies! I get far too attached to animals . Haha

@suzy4027 - Awwww! That is extremely adorable!!! I hope Winnie will always be like that with me. Luci is not as attached and actually pretty nervous when I got to pick her up as I don't think she was handled up until now. Winnie saw me as soon as she hatched and the difference it's made is unbelievable. Those first few days are vital!

Okayy , I'll warn you right off , this is going to be a long one ;)
I received 6 khaki Campbell ducks from Metzer , and they were all healthy and robust even though they had just crossed the country!
I never knew how much mess these things make! They started out with a smaller tub but quickly outgrew it(e.g. in three days)so we were forced to drag the biggest plastic tub we had from the attic , and I dropped it on the concrete. All four corners cracked , so we had to duct tape it.A couple days later we lifted it up to find that the carpet was soaked and mildewed. After that we pushed run construction and got it done 2 weeks later.
Now the actual ducklings are 1 month tomorrow and starting to get in their beautiful feathers. At this point feathers have covered their stomachs and chests , the top of their wings and tails.Just noticed today their face feathers are emerging!
So anyway , I wanted to ask , are all Khaki ducklings very dark and variegated when they first get their feathers in?Because right now every feather is a spitting image of a dark Campbell ...
I'll post some pics later , because I know how hard it is to answer questions like this without pictures ;)
