The Duck Thread

the pen in the garden would only be a day pen. My baby's are inside at night, I don't trust predators and they need to feel safe, they let me know when they want to be inside even during the day
Maybe Amiga has some pics of how her day pen is set up, I've seen them and it's a nice set up.

I've had company for the last week or so and haven't been around much. I hope everyone is doing well. My sweet layer has bumble foot and of course it was on my weekend away. Came home and she is limping like crazy. I'm doing iodine and warm water soaks with Epsom salt. I have a little tub that she fits in and can't drink it. However my sweet duck spends the whole time in there biting the snot out of me! Dang that hurts and I can't blame her but still... I finally called it quits and put her in the house so she wouldn't be running around. It also looks like we are in for a lot of rain here too so I had to batten down the hatches.

I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and buying a styrofoam incubator at a local feed store. I have 17 eggs and she isn't interested in them she rather walk the yard with her boyfriend. I don't know if this will work. Should I try it?

I took my oldest daughter to swim practice at the crack of dawn. She swims at the local water park which happens to be right next to the town duck and goose pond. I don't know why I torture myself, but I had to check for dumped ducklings again. This is new!!!

Makes me so mad. She's really sweet and came up to the car, but when I got out, she stayed just outside of my reach. Don't know what I thought I'd do with her if I caught her.... I'd love to take her home but the DH would flip. Lol. Her left eye didn't look quite right either. The drake to duck ratio is awful so I'm sure she's not having a great time. I've seen an Ancona, a blue Swedish, crested cuyaga, tons of pekins and now this cutie. All but 3 are drakes. That's not counting the mallards. I just know the others have been dumped for sure. Makes me want to punch those people in the throat!!

well, I did that, and it worked for me! Of course momma duck then proceeded to make a nest and is currently sitting it!

I have 2 welsh harlequins and they are crazy aggressive with the neighbor's ducks. They have 2 pekins and 2 Rouens. Their ducks are sweet, calm ducks until mine show up. They get frantic and they all go at each other through the fence! My 2 started it as ducklings. WHs are a lightweight breed and mine have no idea they are! Like piranhas! Or chihuahuas. Lol. WHa are also supposed to be more laid back and friendly. Ummmm, not mine! The female has never been really friendly, but the male is ok. They follow me around, but don't want to be touched or held. They're pretty, but really snotty. This is my 2.

This is Tot the snot. She's the female. Their names are Tater and Tot. Pretty is as pretty does... Lol. They're good ducks, I'm just mad at them for being such butt heads to the neighbors. Not the usual WH.

I love the neighbors pekins and Rouens. I vote for those breeds, BUT my #1 vote goes to a Muscovy! Sweet, quiet, very broody, friendly.... All of the traits you'd want. The only thing you have to get past is the red caruncles on their face/heads. The females can have very little if it's something that puts you off. If it does, I get it, it did me. Now, I'm hoping to get my neighbor's 2 new ones after we see how my drake is going to act once the hormones kick in. Hopefull the new babies are girls! Scovy personalities have won me over. Plus, they come in a TON of colors. This is the neighbor's new babies.

Love your photo's.. Your ducks are beautiful.. The only thing I don't like about Muscovy's, is the can have the tendency to go broody..

I'm with you on that one People who dump should have to serve jail time if they get caught. Poor things I hate it for the girls.

@desiree210I personally would but I'm not even a little experienced at this. I'm on my first incuhatch! My lessons learned are to never trust the gauges the incubator comes with, set it up and run it for 24 hours, check it often if it's your first, ask questions!!
