The Duck Thread

Incubated 10 duck eggs...tried to pick out the freshest ones... I have had to get rid of 3 . Two were leaking some nasty gooey stuff knew to throw them out, and the other was cracked. I'll keep checking on the others. My duck is still laying the eggs are fertile, I checked, i shouldn't add the eggs she is still laying right? Or should I and if not do I bring the eggs inside? She isn't interested in the eggs, she has too much fun

and I don't want them to just sit in the heat and get gross

You can use them fro eating, baking etc they don't have to sit out there and rot. I cook up duck eggs for my dogs too they love them.

I wouldn't add new eggs to bator if you already have some growing .

Breathe, let yourself feel a little sad - I try not to get angry with Bean when he is a twit. It's hormones. And a few times, even my angels, my Runner girls have disappointed me with their hormone-driven behavior.

And I would not give up. I would plan on timeouts for Mr. Jerk Face. Let him be near, but not with for a while. If he is okay with the olders, let him hang out with them. Or even, one buddy one night, a different buddy the next night. You could also try holding him gently but firmly down by pressing on him (like he would with a female). Or, hold him (make sure he cannot flail his wings or grab you if he decides to get ugly - but I don't know for sure he would do that).

Thank you!
I will have to give that a try. When he went after the female Swedish this last weekend, I promptly removed him from the pool and put him in time out. He didn't like it one bit that he didn't get to swim anymore.

Hi everyone! I'm new here and was wondering a few things about my new baby welsh harlequin ducks I got about 2 weeks ago. They are hopefully all female and I have four of them. The main thing I was wondering is why they seem to want little to nothing to do with me. I try talking to them and handling them and playing with them while they swim but it still seems like they could care less if I was there or not. Will that change or is that just the way they are?

Hello and welcome to BYC!! How old are your babies? From what I've observed, they are independent and can keep themselves entertained. I have noticed, however, that they do enjoy having me nearby and will follow me if I go into a different area of our 2 acres. Keep doing what you're doing and if they're old enough, bribery via treats, can help. I started mine with bib lettuce, kale, fresh green beans and dried mealworms. A way to a duck's heart is definitely via their tummy.

My little babies are 2 weeks old today. They definitely like me better when I have food in my hand lol but other then that they tend to try to keep their distance from me. They will peep and some times kind of quack at me when I'm in the room and they hear my voice but they don't like me touching them.

Aw! Please post some pics if you can. What breed? I think it's kind of rare for a duck to enjoy being touched by us humans.

They're very entertaining, but not cuddly.
