The Duck Thread

I am so sorry! Only like 4 weeks old too, huh? I wonder why

I don't know I checked on them about 2 hours ago and she was just fine then. I'm in pieces right now. I just hate any animal dying that is in my care. I feel like its my fault somehow.

I am so sorry for you. It is probably nothing you could have done anything about. Raising baby birds of any sort is a very touch and go situation and there are often losses. That does not make it any easier to deal with and I know what you must be feeling right now. Treasure the ones that are left and keep your eye on them to make sure your loss was not associated with some disease. Bless you.

Is there any signs I should be looking for? Clara (the duck that just passed) was acting completely normal each time I checked on them, I check on them about every 2 hours so she passed within 2 hours.

I got scared when I didn't see veins because I saw some forming on Saturday, I turn seven times a day by hand and since none of my other duck eggs were viable I candled to see what was going on. When all I saw was the dark spot I turned to my duck buddies on BYC. Does this sound common? Will veins just disappear? @WVduckchick @caesargirl

Its honestly hard to say. Give it a few more days. Its possible that you just got a bad angle and missed them. Are you candling when its good and dark? With a good bright light? Are you shining through the air cell from the top down?

It's a very sad day here in my house....i just walked in to check on my ducks and one of them had passed away

RIP little one you will be dearly missed.

Oh, I'm sooo sorry. That must have been horrible!

@WVduckchick thank you for the reply I will wait a few more days. I'll make sure to have all your advice at hand to make sure I'm doing this right

Guys I need help. I might be over reacting but it seems like my other three ducks are starting to breathe really heavy now. Could they just be stressed because their sister just died? Is this something I should worry about? Or is it normal?

They will grieve the loss. But is it hot today? Anything else different than yesterday? What else are they doing? Could they have gotten into something? And I don't mean to sound morbid, or unsympathetic, but did you check the body of the one that passed? Could something have gotten in and bitten it? Or could it have eaten something bad? I'm grasping at anything until others come with other suggestions...

They are still in the house and I check the temp religiously so I don't think it has anything to do with heat and nothing can get to them. The only new thing about there surroundings is some new bedding we put in, but again I watched them very carefully to make sure they weren't trying to eat it or anything like that. I have no idea what could've happend. I checked her body and didn't see any marks on her so no fights between them or anything like that. I just don't know and it's driving me crazy with worry now.

Your worry could just help the others survive if it is something in their environment. Just keep watching over them. Make sure they eat and drink water. Keep them warm but not too and make sure they are not in a draft. Really that is about all you can do at this point. Check around their area and make sure there are no spiders or other thinks that they could eat and get ill. Be patient and we will all prey for you.

Very sorry for your loss! So you've seen them actually eating and drinking? What kind of new bedding did you add?

I really don't know anything about the respiratory rates of ducks. Other than seeing mine pant now & again, I've got no experience.

Yes I sat in there for close to an hour watching the other three and they were drinking and ate a little bit. The new bedding we put in are horse bedding pellets that swell up and become like sand when they get wet. I haven't seen them trying to eat it at all.
