The Duck Thread

Hoping to learn something about waterfowl here! Just marking this for future reading! Was not sure I ever wanted ducks again, as it can be a challenge to keep their pen clean, but considering them for this coming year.

Welcome to the duck forum, and honestly I don't find it any harder to keep things clean for my water fowl than my chickens, you just have to do it right from the start, I learn by trial and error but have found that using landscaping material and river rocks[lowes] helps keep mess down around water areas, and deep litter inside is more than I ever thought would work with water fowl but it does, I use pine shaving and just go in daily scoop out poop laying on top and take my pitch fork and turn over bedding takes about 15-20 min minimum and this is with 17 water fowl. I also use deep litter in chicken coop. Others can give advise on how they do it also so don't be afraid to ask questions..

Thanks for the welcome. I do use the deep litter method for my chickens, and had wondered if it would work for waterfowl too, going to use if for sure.

I had ducks (2) years ago, but had a small pond and they just kinda took care of themselves, in the yard at night, out on the water during the day. All I had to do was feed them and keep their sleeping area clean. Wow, 17 ducks, can't even imagine that!

ktduck, That is so cool that he sleeps like that!

Does anyone else's duckies sleep like this? I'm not too worries but just wanted to see if it happens often? Sometimes (like right now) he droops his head off the couch and falls asleep like that!

Here he is the crazy boy
That is the cutest thing, looks to me like he just feels at home and is very relaxed.

Nice to meet you Patti :). I wish I could get ducklings in the spring, but most likely I'm not gonna be able too. I'm planning more on getting some chicks in the spring and to raise them into a breeding flock.

Well focusing on one thing at a time is good. My flock is nothing special except to me. in other words I don't intend to show anyone they are just a pleasure to have in my life. Are you wanting to get a breeding flock established to show?

Yeah, to show and sell to people and stuff. I mainly keep chickens for they're companionship and they're basically my pets. I also like getting eggs and especially showing mine :)
